  • WiFi and Electricity

Looking to move my sim room (9' ceilings) to a shed outside (18x16x13) which will be located ~100 feet from my home. I have two problems:

    1. No electricity.
    2. No WiFi signal.

Has anyone needed to run electricity out to a shed and have an idea of cost? What's the best way to get a strong WiFi signal from the house to the backyard without running a cable? Anyone have experience? My PC has a WiFi USB which I am using inside and it works well....it's only about 25 feet from the router but signal goes through two walls. Have a GC2 with FR1 so I don't NEED WiFi to get started but would obviously like it when I want to use TGC.

More concerned with the cost of getting electricity to the shed. I would need it for the PC, projector, lights, and some type of heating/cooling unit. The GC can run on its own battery.

Actually considering solar but my guess is that I wouldn't be able to generate enough power...pure speculation though.

    Feedback welcomed.

I have a similar issue - my garage is down a lane to far from the house. I run my projector and LED light from an AGM Leisure battery hooked up to a inverter. I use Mevo+ with my iPad and direct wifi. The iPad has a data plan sim card for internet access (although its not really needed as you cant play online with the free mevo e6 version)

its a bit of a killer carrying the battery back to the house to charge it. I will invest in a solar panel at some point.

I dont run a PC - maybe you could look at a laptop (although i know the graphics card will most probably nail the battery)
perhaps a 4G dongle to run internet for TGC??

im not sure it would cost too much to get someone to run some electricity down to the shed tho - worth getting a quote as its hard work without it

It shouldn't be that much more expensive than any similar size job you would get an electrician for. Armoured cable is only a few pounds per metre (about a dollar per foot), though it depends on how much power you expect to draw through it (higher power means more expensive cable). Of course regulations may vary where you live to make things more expensive?

Home wifi mesh network seems to work well. (ex. Linksys Velop or Orbi) Just put a node by the closest outside wall and you will get signal in the shed.

250' of Armorlite 12/2 is less than $100 at Lowe's. Then get a WiFi extender like the one listed below. My garage was only 65' away but everything worked great.

You can't bury AC90 or install it in wet locations (outside). What he needs is Teck armoured cable or NMWU in conduit.

If you are going to run electric, why not run an ethernet cable as well?

This. Just get a line run out to the building with a wet location-rated Cat6 buried alongside it. A ditch witch could do it fairly quickly, assuming it's not over 100' away.

bubbtubbs Agree on the ditch witch, quick and easy to use. I had to run electric and a gas line to my pool that was about 250' away.

Another option for extended WIFI, if the shed/garage is on the same electrical meter.
