  • Multi-purpose simulator build

I am starting out my simulator build and would like inputs and insights from this forum. A picture of my space is attached. I would love some input from the members here on ideas as I go about remaking this space. My goals are:

    - to continue to use this as a movie room
    - to have a golf sim set up that can easily be dismantled when we watch a movie
    - continue to use same projector, sound equipment, etc.

My ideas, on which I would love and appreciate feedback, are:

    - get rid of the couch, replace with a moveable floor sofa
    - place golf mat in the center of the room
    - have an impact screen that goes across the entire room and covers the equipment (will the impact screen be enough to protect it? Or does it need some extra help?)
    - No netting covering the posters, is that needed? I'm a mid-eighties golfer...
    - Do I need some kind of protection for the ceiling?

It looks like your room is only 10'6 wide. So you won't be able to hit from the centre of the room, unless you have the world's most compact swing. If you want to keep to minimise the amount of clearing away you should consider a ceiling mounted system like Uneekor or Hawk. That intrusion into the room (back left corner as you face the screen) might also cause a problem with your swing.

That is correct, does it matter, if I'm swinging from right-center of the room?

It will mean you won't be able to invite any left handed friends to join you. Apart from that you should be ok. Is that an ultra short throw projector sitting in front of the screen? That wouldn't be suitable for a golf sim, it would be in the firing line. Typically a golf sim projector is ceiling mounted on the centre line over the teeing area, since this usually means it safe from swinging clubs and most golf balls, without the golfer themselves casting a shadow on the screen. Typically this means a short throw projector. For an offset hitting position the centreline is going to be more in the way of a swinging club (depending on how high the projector is mounted), so you'll have to think carefully about projector positioning. A model with horizontal lens shift would help, since that would allow you to move the projector to the right, back over the tee. Horizontal keystone would allow this too, but would be more detrimental to the picture quality.
Full disclosure: I'm only just starting to build my first sim room, so my experience is no more than yours, but I guess I've read more of the posts on this forum than you have 🙂
