  • New garage build, launch monitor opinions

    Hey friends!

I finally talked the lady into converting our 3rd garage port into a sim room for use during these mild Canadian winters. The entire garage is unfinished, so we're walling off the 3rd port, insulating - the works. From drywall to drywall and floor to ceiling, the dimensions will be ~13.5'W, 25'L, 12'H.

The crux here is she's RH and I'm LH.

I've read a bunch of opinions in here that the ideal minimum width to accommodate center ball position for RH&LH would be 15', so we're a smidge short of that. Seeing as we may be hitting slightly off-center (within ~1' of each other), what launch monitors would be feasible for our situation, ideally without having to move the unit in between players? Keep in mind I'd prefer not to shell out $20k for the GCHawk, at least at this juncture.

Your space is best suited for a Uneekor at this point IMO. You could also go with a radar unit but in a garage I would stick with overhead.

Steal every inch you can to make the room as wide as possible

It will be very tight with the QED, but it occurs to me that, statistically, your lady is likely to be shorter than you. If so, you can offset your hitting zone from the centre line by a few inches to the left. She is likely to need less space behind her than you. Of course the shape/style of your swings will also have an impact.

Is a full wall necessary? What if the divider wall was only counter height out near the swing area and then full height for the last 5' or so near the screen? That separates the space and contains the players and their balls from the cars.

That would allow the odd golfer to have a free swing plane at the top and follow through.

You still get a permanent space for your sim setup. Same launch monitor (uneekor is great). Same projector with a 0.50 to 0.90 throw ratio to prevent shadows. If you have more guests over you could pull a car out and have that bay for observation.

The 25' long space would not have a wall for the first 6' as it is an open entryway. Then a 12' long (give or take) counter or bar height wall. Then the wall could 90 upward to the ceiling to contain the balls and screen for the last 7'. I assume you'll have a foot or so behind the screen.

A bar height wall would be 42" and counter height wall is 36", finished. Test your swing plane. One of the players would have about 6' from the ball to this short wall. Would this mess with your head? Your club could go over this divide if you or your guest's swing is flat.

Players, gof bags, monitors, keyboard etc can be in the back with the entryway. The counter height wall could be capped with some nice wood as a place to set your drink.

These are rough numbers, but it gives you an option to have a permanent space that could really be opened up if you needed to pull a car out. 99% of the time it'll be 1 or 2 people playing. You'll need every inch of the width and length though. 10'-12' screen to ball, then a safe 8' in about every direction along the swing plane needs to be clear, which leaves you with 5 feet at the back/entryway to sit.

Drywall the rest of the garage and/or turn the lights off in those bays.

The half-wall would be a perfect solution, if not for the 2+ months below -10°C (14°F). The room absolutely has to be fully enclosed and heated, unfortunately.

Back to my previous comments then, make the room as wide as you possibly can, and offset the hitting zone in favour of the golfer with the wider swing.

Uneekor QED has about an 18" window in the ball placement.

            13.5' = 162"
            162"/2 = 81"
            18"/2 = 9"

Each player would have less than 90" (ball to wall) if the uneekor was center mounted to the room's width.

EyeXO might have a 12" window, but don't quote me.

Swing with that distance to a wall.

14 is cold when the whole garage isn't insulated.

Uneekor is sounding more and more like the way to go. Thanks a mil for the input, everyone!
