  • Project through a net onto wall

Hello All, I apologize if this has been discussed. Please let me know if a thread exists. Although there may be a reason why it doesn’t...
I’m just starting to design my garage based sim. Skytrak is on the way.
Wondering if anyone has tried projecting through a net and onto a wall? Not a stand alone net but something I’d need to make custom. Was envisioning a ceiling mounted curtain track, u-shaped to both absorb the shot and my shanks.
If not, any obvious issues with this approach?
Assume there’d be some shadows and those would be more pronounced the closer the net is to the projector.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Before I build my enclosure, I mounted a projector behind my hitting area and threw an image through the net and onto the wall behind my net. It worked ok, but I wasn’t super happy with the picture. I’d only recommend this setup as an interim option if your budget doesn’t allow for a full enclosure build.

In my case I found that the projected image was clear enough for tee shots and approach shots, but as you get closer to the green the net lines obscure enough of the image to make planning short pitches, chips, and putts difficult. I would usually use my side monitor to plan those shots, and watch the (somewhat obscured) results through the net.

I’ve see other setups where the projector is mounted above or behind the net, and throws an image onto a wall behind the net. Those setups have clearer images (without net lines) but you’ll still be looking through the net, which partially obscures the image. Again, it will likely work as an interim option, but if you have the budget, building an enclosure and hanging a cheap screen will give you a much better playing experience.

I would suggest doing a search on PR20 screens. I believe some have tried this for their image. Another option for something similar (if not the same) is archery netting. There was a bit of discussion on this a couple of years ago. More on the screen than the image through the screen and onto a wall.

If you have the space, you could try an ultra short throw projector behind the net projecting onto the wall. There are limitations on how big the image will be but it will be clear (i.e. no shadows). You would need a few feet between the net and the wall I would imagine. Just a thought.
