I have wanted to put in a simulator for a while now. Basement ceiling only had 7’3” of height so finally negotiated with my wife and she signed on for a floor lowering project. Final heaight is 114” of clearance from finished floor to bottom of ceiling joists. Will update this post was we go along, I think the room should work out nicely as a sim and home theater. Concrete floor is almost done, then walls start going in a week or so.

Awesome start. I did the same thing in my build and it was the best money ever spent. Really makes you feel immersed in the whole experience. I like the design of the step down into the room, gives it something a little different.
Enjoy the build...

I am going to install a Carl’s place premium screen (9x12) and use their frame, but not the enclosure. Anyone have a suggestion for a vendor for side curtains on rails (black, heavy material)? I plan to have the tee 8.5 to 9 feet from the screen and am going to have curtains that we can slide on both sides and velcro them to the edge of the screen/frame. Still haven’t made my mind up about what to use for the ceiling. Wife is running the decor so she must approve and it has to look good. Room walls are going to be covered with faux stone panels.Last edited by CarlSpackler; 12-23-2020, 05:43 PM.

I used material from Chicago Canvas. They have a heavy black fabric. They are good to work with and they will provide samples. For the material around the screen, I made baffles from the Chicago canvas material for the top and then for the sides I wrapped a 1x 6 board with the same material. My screen is 14 foot wide so not too worried about missing the screen right or left. I then installed small hooks on the back of the 1 x6 so I could attached them to the bungees holding the screen. This allows me to take the sides off if I need to adjust the screen. Works and gives the screen a built in look.

Looks great so far. I am very jealous. I would do the same thing but I live on a canal. If I tried what you did I would have a built in swimming pool in my basement. Just a question though, why the odd shape and not a full rectangle dig out?

Because of the layout of our basement, my wife and I “negotiated” the shape. She wanted a “natural flow” entrance to the sunken floor and based upon the elements of the left side of the room (the side with the angled step) it was better design wise to angle that step than just have steps straight across the back of the sunken area. I think it will make sense when it is all done.
Pic below is looking towards back of room. There will be theater style seats against that back wall and on the right side of this picture, between the farthest Lolly column and the wall there is going to be a knee wall with a bar top on it. The entrance to the room will be between the two columns that are shown. There will be a similar knee wall running from the closer column to the front of the room.

I love seeing builds like this because I can show them to my wife and say "See? It could be worse" to justify my garage build lol. Excited to follow the progress of this one. You mentioned the ceiling height but what are the length and width dimensions of the cut-out floor space?

The cut out is 147.5” wide (12ft 2.5in) and 19.5 ft long from front to bottom back step. Width was limited by footings under lolly columns and other side foundation wall. Wanted enough space behind steps to put in seating. It’s about 9 feet from edge of top step to rear wall so plenty of room for seating.
quattro mat just arrived, but mevo+ and Carl’s screen and frame won’t be here for about 3 weeks. So plenty of time to get walls up and figure out how it the curtains and ceiling protection.
