I have wanted to put in a simulator for a while now. Basement ceiling only had 7’3” of height so finally negotiated with my wife and she signed on for a floor lowering project. Final heaight is 114” of clearance from finished floor to bottom of ceiling joists. Will update this post was we go along, I think the room should work out nicely as a sim and home theater. Concrete floor is almost done, then walls start going in a week or so.

New Sim Build Underway, Basement Floor Lowering

I posted these pics above for anyone building to see how some of this stuff comes together during construction. This is a Carl’s Place frame for a screen. Easy to cut the EMT and build it. I am not using the enclosure. On the left of the screen you can see the curtain track that will run along the edge and stop errant shots. There will be curtains on both sides. It’s a tight fit but that’s what I wanted and I put it all together before the carpeting goes in to make sure it fits properly.

Love what you are doing so far. And I’ve been working on doing it for my own basement as my ceiling height is at 8ft5 and I’d like to lower it to 10ft. I spoke with a concrete guy, and he said he could do it no problem, but that he’s not responsible if my footings of my house moves as a result, and recommended that I get an engineered plan. Did you do anything like that for yours? Or just gave the concrete guys the green light to dig away?
Also at your width do you think you have enough room for both left and right hitters to play from the middle? Or are you just going to set it up for you only kind of thing? I was thinking of going 15 feet wide and 20 long with a 2ft lowering of the floor.

I didn’t do engineered plans after interviewing several contractors. Just stay away from the walls and footings. If you leave a foot or so from the edge of the footings to the lowered floor wall, it was generally agreed there shouldn’t be an issue. They just have to build a firm side wall out of block and backfill it really tightly. Can’t hurt to run it by an engineer, but I felt pretty comfortable with the plan.
I will have to move the sim for lefties. Another reason the Mevo+ works better than skytrack for me. It will be offset some. I think 15 feet is the magic number. I was constrained by the footings under the foundation wall and those under the Lolly columns on the other side.

CarlSpackler i have so much respect for you! Haha I currently have a GC2 in my garage sim and have to move it for my driver compared to where I hit my irons for both lefties are righties. It’s a little hillbilly style but gets the job done. After further evaluating my basement space I think I’ll only be able to go about 12 feet wide and will have to do the same thing there as well...

Runnrebel, the faux stone is expensive. Advice, go right to the maker not a Home Depot or Lowe’s and you save big money. The panels are 2 ft x 3 ft and you need to order about 20% extra because of odd cuts that are required. They are easy to work with but require a lot of planning. If you go this route reach out, I learned a lot of lessons and can help you avoid some of my mistakes.

great build, really like how everything came together start to finish. I have my sportscreen set up in garage, motor winds it up to keep garage functional. Have 13 ft of synlawn turf, GC2, and surround. Trying to get my significant other to sign off on letting me raise floor joist(have rafter style roof so not a big deal, would allow 11ft instead of current 9') into attic, but no go so far. Congrats on build and sure you will enjoy.

Looks absolutely amazing, great idea with the faux stone, has a great country club feel to it. Also planning on doing screen only and with curtains, like you have used.
I was wondering, what is your plan for flooring and turf? Once again, fantastic job!

Thanks.
Floor Is done. I used a tight weave carpeting on top of two 1/2” layers of padding (so it’s the same height as the mat). and cut the middle out and installed the Quattro mat. I like the Quattro mat a lot. Putting wasn’t a focus at this point. At some point I might add some strips for putting, but for now I will putt on the Matt to the carpet.

How does that cat feel about all that golfing going on? My dog growls at me when set up to hit a shot...
