  • Ceiling Protection Help

    Hi folks,

I have recently finished my SIM setup in my unfinished basement. Attached is a picture of the setup with dimensions. I am looking for suggestions on how to protect the ducting and the beams behind it that run left to right for the entire width of the enclosure. The edge of the ducting closest to the hitting mat is approximately 28" from the top front enclosure bar. The height from floor to the ducting is 96". From the ducting to the hitting mat and beyond the ceiling height is 105". As this is an unfinished basement, ideally I would also like some form of ceiling protection from the ducting to the front edge of the hitting mat which is a total distance of approximately 5 feet.

    Would appreciate any assistance.

    Thanks!

I bought a 10'x 10' golf net and strung it across my ceiling. Works great and very cheap. Search Amazon, they are all over the place.

Thanks for the response. How tight do you have the net? Is it at an increasing/decreasing angle from the screen out to the mat? How would the net work for protecting the ducting/beams directly in front of the enclosure? Given that the ceiling height there is 96" and the rest is 106" I don't have much overhead buffer space.

I have it fairly tight and it angles down as it gets closer to my screen. That way it does not interfere with my projector image. I just went back and looked at your pic and you have a very low ceiling and duct work. I am thinking that maybe you get some 2 or 3 inch foam instead. Good luck.

      Thanks! I'll investigate that option.

Well I took jpotas's advice and put acoustic foam on my basement ceiling. First I attached corrugated plastic boards to the beams. Then I attached 1" egg carton acoustic foam to the corrugated plastic using 3M Adhesive Spray 77. I let that set for 24 hours and then reinforced the foam to the corrugated plastic using t-pins every foot. Attached are pics before, during, and after. Not the most clean cut/straight-lined job but it does the trick

I'm also going to cover up the left wall, floor to ceiling, with the same acoustic foam from the simulator frame extending out to where the foam on the ceiling ends. I think this will be a much cleaner look than the insulation and protect the window (just in case)...
