  • Garage Build (#1) - Just waiting on SkyTrak

First off thank you to all that have come before me. You guys have done excellent work and I appreciate EVERYTHING this forum has done for me.

    2 Car Garage (finished)
Due to my space (mainly the amount of other sporting goods stuff we already own) and current configuration of the garage I decided that I needed to put my screen cage on wheels. This will allow me to take out the garbage, use the snow blower, take bikes out, etc...

11 x 8 x 4. Because I am a goober my dimensions are slightly bigger because of the EMT connection pieces and also my wooden frame.

After doing the spreadsheet I determined it would be more cost effective to go the DIY route. I also like project planning and this was a great way to have some fun with the wait time for SkyTrak.

    Sides / Enclosure - PeakTarps.com
    - I will say this company exceeded my expectations. I wish I would have spent a little more time ironing out the details and adding a few more grommets and Velcro. That is on me though and PeakTarps delivered a top notch product that very much works. I went with their off the roll sizing (4.5 ft wide) to save on some costs and just had the lengths cut to my dimensions. I was so worried about how the Valence would be added to my top baffle piece that I neglected the additional grommets and Velcrow that would have made my build that much better. No big loss though. They did Velcrow the pieces I bought and they go together perfect.

Screen - Spectrum Golf Premium 3 layer
    - Yes he is slow to respond, and yes he does respond but you need to give him time. I thought the screen would have had the sleeve run the full length of the screen but they have 1 closed edge per side. However, after many reviews where members of this site basically just said shelf his instructions for building, I knew I was going alone. No real biggie as I just used a piece of PVC in the top sleeve and a wooden closet dowel in the bottom. I attached HomeDepot tarp clips to the sides to create my tautness.
-I also did something that I did not see on this site. I did use the AllSportsSytems Skybridge system to support my screen. I have it mounted about 4 inches in front of the EMT enclosure (basically in front of the EMT connector pieces) but rather than use conduit to support the sides I just ran some paracord and attached the Tarp Clips to it and the screen. 2 less EMT pipes to pad and protect.

    Mat - Rawhide Range Mat
-I scored this mat last summer for the backyard to hit balls with an idea that I may have a SIM one day. I scored because you could get these on the Bay for a steal before everybody caught on.

Flooring - Home Depot Gym Tiles and Grass Carpeting
-I did order a custom piece of longer shag grass for in front of the screen.

    Protection Elements
-Still waiting for my custom Foamonline.com pieces so I will comment when these arrive. I will use some of my extra blackout curtain material to cover these. I will also use Zip Ties instead of getting a sewing machine or labor involved. These are really just for the 4 side EMT pieces and the top front piece.
-I purchased a cage net from Spectrum Golf to cover the PeaksTarps enclosure and to mount behind the screen as an additional baffle. It was mentioned numerous times to help your screen withstand the abuse. I also have a Wife and 5 year old that are just taking the game up and wanted to make the enclosure a little beefier. In reality the PeaksTarps material is probably more than enough.
-I used part of the Amazon blackout curtains as a small side of screen protection curtain. I zip tied a 12 inch piece of the curtain in an L shape from the side support to behind the screen. The top grommets on the curtains were perfect for this attachment.
-I then attached a few more HD tarp clips to the screen and attached some Velcrow (Hooks) to them. I Ordered a 24 inch wide piece of Loop Velcrow and mounted that Face down to the Hooks on the tarp clips and have a beautiful finished edge on my sides of my screen. I believe between the Velcrow piece and my L shaped curtains that my rear support EMT is safe from any shanks. I also used foam padding on the rear and front support EMT.
-I had a few (free) other blinds in packaging that was never used 10+ years ago as my side shank curtains. Attached with a string on a ratcheting like device to make tight and adjustable.

This was my first build and this site was more than amazing. I did use the schematics from Gunghogolf.com to build the EMT enclosure. I also purchased my SkyTrak from him so my thoughts are with Texas now.

No real directions were followed and much of it was just trial and error. The first ball we hit at the screen just bounced off softly and I felt like I was a pro builder at that point. I probably went overboard on the bungees, zip ties, Velcrow strap attachments but I used most of it and having extra thingies to attach things was welcomed.

All in all it takes less than 5 minutes to pick up and move out of the way to use the garage door. The foam tiles are moved from under the carpet and the large front grass is folded up. Covid has taught me that I have an extra few minutes. I sacrificed the Garage Door lift motor for the projector mount and more swing room. No biggie, no added costs.

Dropped coin on The Golf Club and a new Dedicated Gaming CPU, Golfing buddy gave me his old 55 inch TV for the garage. My wife would have preferred we just use the old 40 inch that is still sitting in our back bedroom on the floor.

Using the BenQ 671 Short Throw projector.

Built a custom controller from Amazon parts as well as a small pop up desk that I can attach to a ladder and use another wireless keyboard and mouse since my original projector mount did not work as intended.

Also installed some cheap LED track lighting above the mat.

Fun to hit balls in the garage, wife didn't complain of any noise, or about how much money I spent!

Do you know what graphics card is in the PC? If you have additional display ports or HDMI ports, hook those up to that 40" tv and have an additional monitor out there. In my build, I started with just a projector screen and 24" computer monitor. Then added a 55" TV as an additional monitor and run Youtube TV / Netflix / whatever on there. A couple years later I added a pair of 58" TVs to the back of the room and set it up so they can either mirror the projector screen, the other 55" TV, be hooked up to the computer as an additional monitor & be connected to the surround sound, or it can be a stand-alone Smart TV. Had a couple nights where I'd have the Golf Channel on one TV, the Blackhawks game on another, and the QED Ignite software showing the club path on the 3rd TV. You can always use more screens!

Nice! I also have a Rawhide mat and really like it. I like that you can use real tees with it. (I use plastic ones so they won't break and also orange in color so they don't trip up the Skytrak camera). Welcome to the club.
