  • PC placement and cables

    Hi

I have a bit of dilemma. I have an outdoor sim and I am planning to buy a tower gaming PC instead of a laptop and run a HDMI from the PC in the house to outside sim screen- approx 20m run . I tested my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse on my existing PC and the bluetooth doesnt transmit far enough outside (about 10m direct through brick wall). I could run some 20m usb cables but concerned whether this would work effectively. I have also considered touch screen monitors but I believe these also need a usb for the touch interface.

Anyone have a setup with distance between their PC and the their sim and how did you overcome the peripheral connections (i.e. mouse, keyboard)?

Can't you just place the PC tower outside and use an extension cord to plug it in?

I recall a post a couple months ago where someone did this using a KVM switch. You could try to find that post.

For such a long distance, I would think the only wire run that could get you video, audio, and keyboard/mouse controls is an ethernet cable that connects to the PC and an interface device that connects your peripherals. Maybe a KVM connects this way? In any case, I'm sure a device like this exists.

    Good luck!

Thanks not sure as this seems to enable switching between two or more PCs but i'll look into it further

You can buy a waterproof cabinet to keep outside and store the computer, mouse and keyboard in. Google "waterproof cabinet." Lots of options that are designed for outdoor kitchens and outdoor electrical stuff. As far as the extension cord, you can bury it in the ground inside some PVC pipe to run it from the house to the sim.

You should have no problem with a USB extension to get your bluetooth transceiver close enough. I think that is a better approach (much cheaper) than trying to store your PC outside. You make be able to run the extension just to the other side of the exterior wall.

Hacker1 Just search “USB extension cable” in whatever store you prefer. Pick a length that works. If you are using built-in Bluetooth in your pc, also buy a Bluetooth dongle. The Bluetooth transceiver gets plugged into the end of the usb extension cable.

I have something similar to what you're trying to do. I have a gaming PC inside and my sim setup is currently outdoors while my house is being renovated. My net is pretty far from the house so running cables isn't really practical. I have an old laptop that I basically set up as a dumb terminal and I stream my desktop to that. An issue I had to overcome was connecting my GC2. I found a program that shares the usb port from my laptop over the network so the inside PC thinks it's a local port. I use moonlight to stream my desktop and it works well. I initially tried remote desktop but that was crap, so make sure you get something designed for streaming games. I believe moonlight is native to the nvidia cards so if that's what you have it will work well. I'm sure if I had a projector I could output the video directly from the laptop laptop too.
