  • New Sim Build, looking for suggestions

Been following this site for a couple years getting ideas on my own simulator build. Never thought it would be this complex, but I love planning and figuring out how I should build it.

I built a room on the backside of my garage for a simulator/mancave. It’s 40 foot long by about 17 ½ feet wide. Approximately half, 20x 17.5 area will be for the simulator part. Ceiling height in simulator part is about 10’ 5”. I ordered a screen from Carl’s place and it’s a 16 x 10 with a 10-foot enclosure.

I will be using TFD putting elite on top of subfloor, and am going to cut out an area for a real feel golf hitting mat. I was thinking of hitting about 12 feet from screen, but am flexible with that (I cut a hole in the subfloor, with a ball return made of 4in PVC that is hidden under the floor, and was hoping to get a 10-12 foot putt). Not sure if that’s a good idea or should be closer, depending on projector I choose. Was thinking of a 4k projector, but looking for suggestions on that. Eventually the screen will double as a movie theater room, which is why I was leaning towards a 4k projector, but again not for sure what route to go there? What would be a good ceiling mounted distance for my setup? I figured I needed to decide on that before finding my projector options.

I haven’t yet decided on a launch monitor, but am leaning towards gcquad from foresight (could probably be convinced into something else as well). Will set up with a touch screen mounted on the wall.

Basically I’m looking for a little help figuring out the projector or any other suggestions regarding my setup with do’s/don’ts that others have experienced.

Have a look at the Benq that both Jay at Golf Sim Videos and Mr Short game uses. They both have videos on YouTube of their projectors.

Quad is a good choice, question is whether you want something portable or not? If not, then why not something out of the way like the Hawk?

Man that projector looks legit. Might be a bit out of price range for me. I'm shooting for a 20-25K budget overall. Was looking in the 1500-2000 range for the projector. Have a little flexibility but thats my goal anyways. I have been going through the projector central website a lot looking at calculations and whatnot. I was curious on say for example the BenQ tk850. Looks like with my screen size it would need to be mounted about 18 foot from the screen, and could be mounted from 0-11 inches from top of screen. My only worry is if Im hitting about 12 feet from screen, will I run into shadow issues?

And as far as the quad vs hawk, its just a price decision I would have to make. I love the idea of the hawk mounted and out of the way, as I don't really need the portable aspect at all. Just haven't found any other options with the similar price tag as the quad that are more permanently mounted, but if there was I would look very hard at them, and I may very well end up going for the hawk route too.

There has been some discussion on this forum of a new Benq 4K that will be coming out in the near future. Can’t recall the number, but might be worth a search.

The Benq TK700STi? honestly looks like a perfect fit for me, just not out yet it appears.

How does Uneekor compare to the Quad and Hawk?

Uneekor has been very good for me, but imo it's not quite as reliably accurate as the Quad, never used the Hawk so can't speak on that. I'd say my EyeXo has about a 5% error rate vs my Quad which was like 0% from what I could tell at least.

For the money I don't think the Uneekor units can be beat though as they allow for integration with any software you can imagine and they have top tier customer support. I think in a year's time with some more software updates Uneekor could be just as accurate as the Foresight launch monitors.

It’s awesome and it should be the only choice vs a hawk. It’s just as accurate and it’s being updated monthly. Flexibility with software, price, manufacturers support and the list goes on...

Have you ran both the eyeXO and the hawk? Do you like one more than the other? Price is definitely a huge plus for the XO. I would love to go to the route of the ceiling mounted launch monitor. I just honestly had foresight gcquad (cheaper than the hawk) or hawk in my visions. But it sounds like the uneeker is a lot more flexible as far as what software you use.
