New Cathedral Ceiling Build Questions

Hello All! This is my first Golf Simulator Forum post.

I have been reading and researching for several months while I have been constructing a new building with a simulator/bar in the upstairs. I am leaning towards a GC Hawk. My room is 18' 6" wide and 40' Long. Side walls are 7' from floor to finished ceiling. 10' down the center from floor to peak. I will have the screen 1' away from the wall and would like to be 14-16' from the screen if possible.

Questions are:

1. How big of a screen can I go with and how will I handle the vaulted angle of the ceiling?
2. How far should I be looking to mount my projector away from the screen and/or the hitting surface?
3. Any suggestions on projectors to fill this screen would be great also!
4. What would be an ideal in ceiling and/or wall speaker system?

I think I will have to stand a little offset of the center of the room to avoid driver strikes with the ceiling due to the angle of the ceiling slopes. I have swung a driver a bit up there and I feel comfortable 1-2 feet offset from the center. I plan on either foam, carpet or retractable curtains for wall protection the same for ceiling protection. I just can't give up much height with whatever I go with on the ceiling.

Can I make this a reality?

1. A screen 14 feet wide and just under 8 feet tall would give you a 16:9 aspect ratio which is a nice native resolution and makes projector choice and placement pretty easy. That should work for your space. It looks like the point at which it would reach the 8 foot mark it would be around 2 feet in from the walls. Measure that and see.

2. 14-16 feet away for a hitting spot is really far, especially for ceilings that aren't very high. You may want to re-think that. You should be aiming more for like 10 feet away max.

14’ screen in the center would give me 93” from floor to ceiling for screen height This leaving 27” from screen edge to the side wall. The hawk mounts 4’ infront of the golfer. If I mounted a projector in front of the golfer at 7’ from screen wouldn’t I have concerns of hitting it or issues with the hawk being in the way as well? What can I do to get the projector behind the golfer?

You shouldn't have concerns about hitting the projector in that spot. You're going to be slightly offset anyway with the projector well in front of you and slightly to the left because of the offset hitting position. It will also be a good 9.5 feet or so in the air. I can't imagine your follow through is reaching that.

I know nothing about the hawk so I can't speak on that. But if you hit from 10 feet away then the hawk is 6 feet away and offset to line up with your hitting position. The projector is at 7 feet and centered. So they will not be along the same line. Hawk will be offset and along the target line while the projector is centered to the screen.

If you hit a wedge from 14 feet away with ceilings of less than 10 feet (since you'll be offset under the lower ceiling), that ball is smacking the ceiling long before it even gets close to the screen. A 1:1 ratio is a good rule of thumb, meaning your hitting distance should about equal your screen or enclosure height. That equates to a 45 degree launch angle hitting the very top.

You Also do not need to mount the projector ahead of the Hawk. Choose a hitting distance (as previously discussed this generally is in the 8-10 foot range - that will determine the position of the Hawk. Then search for a projector with the qualities you are after (resolution, aspect ratio, brightness, bulb type - in that order would be my recommendation) that can be mounted essentially directly over your hitting position (ideally). This is how I would approach the planning. Navigate around the Projector Central link provided - there is a wealth of information on that site!

BenQ TK700STi Projector I realize it isn't out yet, but I'm not in a big yank. https://www.projectorcentral.com/Ben...ulator-pro.htm This would allow me to mount the projector 12-13' from the screen and have a 165" x 93" 16:9 screen. This projector also has a 9" vertical offset which would work out well for me mounting it at 10'

Did you end up getting that projector? Any updates on your build? I have a similar situation with my ceiling and am aiming for 13ft ball to screen for Mevo+ Indoor Mode. Cheers

Not so sure about that projector. 12-13 feet away with low ceilings and hitting from 9 or so feet is likely to put your shadow on the screen. Can't say for sure, but I'd be a bit worried by that.
