  • 8'7" Ceiling Height Garage Build

For those with a low ceiling height...it depends. My ceiling height is 8'7" in my garage. I am not that tall at 5'7" but I can swing every club including driver. I was definitely nervous and had been holding back until the last TGC2019 round. Finally starting to build some speed and follow-through back in. I'm a 15 handicap and have been working on shallowing the club, so hopefully that is helping me to have some clearance to the ceiling in my follow-through.

I had a couple people over for the Masters and 1 friend who is 5'10" and a single digit handicap had no problem. My brother-in-law, on the other hand, is 5'11" and he is probably a 25 handicap. He hit the ceiling with his 4 hybrid. He has a tendency to get steep and fall back.

On to the build. I have been using a Net Return Pro in the back for almost a year in the backyard. My Skytrak was run through an iPad and cast to an outdoor TV. It's been great, although I would get a fair amount of misreads. I think some of it had to do with my WIFI strength in the back, but definitely I was limited on what time of day I could use the Skytrak due to the sun position.

Build 2.0 (I guess pictures in Portrait orientation do not meet the size requirements on this forum, so I'll need to add more later) Click image for larger version

Impact Screen: Par2Pro 10' wide Stealth Elite. Overall a really great product. The roller tube came with some pretty big dents from TheSportsScreen, but they shipped out a replacement and I received it in a little over 1 week. If I had it to do over again, I would have just bought TheSportsScreen and an imperfect SQ impact screen to put together myself. I would have saved about $800 that way, but I don't have a ton of time with 2 young kids. $800 to keep some peace with the wife. The screen has a very nice picture quality and we also use it to do movie night with the kids. They love it.

Hitting Mat: 5-Star Perfect Reaction (5'x5'). I started with the 6'x10' Pro Turf mat that came with my Net Return, but it was way too thin and I started to get some elbow pain. The 5-Star mat is way better and gives me more accurate distance and spin numbers. It's light, so it was always moving around when I used it in the back. My garage has a small step up right behind where the projector hangs, which is perfect. I put the Pro Turf mat going the width of the screen and butted up against the step. Then I put the 5-Star mat against it. No more moving around!

Projector: Optoma GT1080HDR Short Throw. Great for my application. It's mounted to the ceiling about 1' in front of the ball, so no real chance of hitting it with the club or the ball.

    Launch Monitor: Skytrak with FMJ

Simulation Software: TGC2019...so happy with this.

That looks great. One question though --- is there no side protection over there by the fridge?

Yeah, the fridge would have several dimples in it if it was in my sim room...lol

Probably didn’t capture it in this picture, but yes I do use a side barrier since I’ve had plenty of struggles with the word that rhymes with “thanks!” The par2pro screen came with Velcro sewn to the edges, so I was actually able to attach my side barriers from my net return setup. Doesn’t take long but one more thing to do. So I bought a blackout curtain that is 10’ wide by 8’ high that I am going to hang from the ceiling so I can easily pull it shut. Cost me $50 on Amazon.

I'm a couple weeks away from starting my build and have the same ceiling height in my basement, great to hear it's doable although some guys won't be able to swing all their clubs.
How did you fasten the interlocking foam mats to the ceiling?

That was the latest addition after some high lofted wedge shots hit the screen and then the ceiling. I bought a 10’x8’ mesh tarp from harbor freight and folded it over. Grommets fastened to the ceiling by the screen in 6 places with wood screws, folded edge fastened to the ceiling using tarp clips. Tarp was $25, tarp clips were $5 from harbor freight. Folding it over created a pocket and it works great so far.

Pretty cool how those black mesh traps from Harbor Freight go a long way in the DIY sim area. Great job.

Wild-turkey - great build. I have a similar setup in my garage with 8’10”ceilings and a 14’ Par2Pro stealth elite retractable screen. No problems to date other than when I hit wedges the backspin sometimes causes the ball to run up the stealth elite screen, over the roller, dent my sheetrock wall behind the screen and then fall to the floor. I’m wondering if you have this issue where occasionally balls can get over the roller and behind the screen or is that why you installed the mesh traps?

I’m only hitting from about 8’ away and I’ve had wedges roll up the screen and hit the ceiling in front of the roller screen. And yes, that is why I put up the tarp with some leftover foam tiles from the kids play area. I’ve only got 9 holes in so far since putting up the tarp but I think that’s going to do the trick. Your mileage may vary!
