The base is dirt and sand, and then we dumped a literal ton of concrete fines on top and tamped it all down and made it level (or as close as we could). The base on top is made of interlocking pieces that fit together. We put some weed barrier between the concrete fines and the panels and it made it easier for them to slide together. All the panels have some holes in them, so rain water can drain, but it drains pretty slow with the mat laying on top. We had a really hard rain and it was squishy for a day afterward - but was not unplayable.
I've got pictures below of the TrueStrike in pieces so you can see the gel pad. I'll need to remove that this winter so it doesn't freeze.
There is no reason someone couldn't do all of the this indoors. They make it for indoor use. Its just durable enough to be outside as well. Took me and a neighbors a full morning to unload the fines, tamp them down, and assemble the pieces. ProPutt had drop shipped the turf (on long roll) and all the panel pieces boxed up on two pallets last fall - the day of the first snow... so they waited all winter for spring to arrive and the ground to thaw. Except the chipping pad, I took that turf inside to place with
Because its all on the same level for the full swing hitting, I set the Mevo+ at the very back edge of the turf, against the panel bumper, and know that its 9 feet from the center of the hitting panel. My iPad or iPhone (not pictured) sits on the ground right by the hitting panel. With summer approaching I may need to figure our some sort of sun shade or something. One step at a time...
Any questions let me know. Or advice - I can always use that.
