  • New Build: Tight Fit, Need Suggestions

I’m working with a room that’s 12’9” x 10’ and decided to piece it together as I go. So far, I purchased:
    • Skytrak launch monitor
    • Net Return Pro net
    • Net Return Pro turf
While waiting for the skytrak to show up I set up the net and turf and hit a few balls. I love both items but quickly realized that the longest club I can swing with this setup is 3i. Not exactly a dealbreaker for me, but I’m curious if there’s an easier way to gain 2’ so I can swing driver comfortably in there, without knocking down a wall? Would replacing the net with an impact screen do the trick or will I need to stand farther away from the screen to avoid bounce back? I’m about 4’ from the net right now and it works great but I can’t back up any further. Thoughts, questions and suggestions welcome.

I can't see how it would be possible to hit from any closer than your current 4 feet (even that is hard for me to picture). With a driver being 3.5 to 4 feet long in itself, plus your outstretched arms in the follow through and a body rotation toward the target, that driver head is going to smash the net or screen from only 4 feet away. Aren't you coming pretty close to it with the 3 iron?

I guess what I'm having a hard time grasping is how you are only 4 feet from the net but a good 7 feet or so(?) from the back wall but it's the back wall that's giving you issues and not the net?

That room is really tight, but with an impact screen you could probably get away with 12 feet of depth (leaving 9 inches behind the screen, which is doable with padding/blankets). If you could hit from 6 feet back, would 6 feet to the back wall be enough? Or maybe 5 from the screen and 7 from the back wall? I would have to think 5 from the screen would be the absolute limit, even with all bounce back under control.

I’m guesstimating on the 4’ from the net, but I clear the back wall (barely) on the backswing and I clear the net on the follow through. See pics below. I was hoping a screen could be mounted closer to the wall, thus allowing me to move a foot or two to my left in order to swing woods.

I think the closest that people have gotten away with from screen to wall is maybe 8 inches or so (just based on what I recall reading here and there on this forum). That's with mattress padding and blankets and everything behind the screen.

I think with the net though, it gives a lot more upon impact. So the net sort of gets moved out of the way of your club by the ball hitting it. An impact screen will not give like that.

Try this ..... measure out 5' 9'' from the wall and put a ball there. Take a driver and make some slow motion swings to see how much clearance you have for your backswing. At 5' 9'' from the front wall, you will have 7 feet from ball to back wall to make your backswing.

The reason I say 5' 9'' is because that leaves you 8-9 inches behind the screen (the least amount I think is possible) and then 5 feet of hitting distance (the closest I think could be possible with a driver).

Cool, thank you. I'll try that tonight and report back.

Curious about this myself. I have a Net Return Pro in my garage. I just refinished the garage to make it a nicer environment. There are only two spots I can stand and swing a driver without hitting my garage door opener. I am wondering if I could reduce the overall size of my setup just a bit by ditching the net return and going with some sort of permanently mounted impact screen on my back wall.

Any one have an idea on the minimum reasonable distance between the wall and my tee? Or maybe better yet, how close can I get a screen to the actual wall? With the Net return pro, even if you put it right up against the wall, your screen is about a club length from the wall.

As I stated above, the minimum amount of space between wall and impact screen that I have heard people getting away with is about 8 inches. Might be able to trim it to 6 inches with the right padding behind it. I don't think I recall seeing anyone with less than that.

Sorry, I'm slacking! I'm on puppy duty and it's been slowing my build. I forgot how much work a puppy is! I'll definitely have some news to report back this weekend. Also, just thinking out loud, but I bet one of those memory foam mattress toppers would be a nice backer for a screen if you had to mount it close to the wall. It should be soft enough to limit bounce back and really deaden the impact.

Ok, I did this and I have plenty of room for full swings with the driver! In fact I can get away with 6’6” off the wall, which would put me 5’ 9” from the screen if I gave it 9” between the screen and wall. It’s looking like impact screen is the way to go.
