  • Garage door question - need part of a rail removed

I am installing a new build in my garage. I would like to put the screen on a wall where one of my garage door rails is in front of. I can fit the screen fine behind the rail completely, but the curtains I'm planning to install have the end of the rail in the way by about a foot. When my garage door is fully open it doesn't even go up to the area I would like to cut off. It seems doable but would cutting off part of the garage door rail cause any imbalances in the door itself? I can make it work without cutting off by just moving the curtains around it, but it could be a hazard that I would need to pad or something.

I know what you're talking about and have always wondered why the rails are so much longer than necessary. I would think if you supported the rail closer to the door to make sure it could hold the weight it would be fine. However, I'm not a garage door expert! Many contractors offer free estimates, maybe contact a garage door outfit and have them come out to take a look?

Yes u can remove the excess rail beyond the support bracket. I just did that on my new house after asking the installer if it was all right. I used a reciprocating saw with a metal blade. Zipped them off like butter

When I had the new insulated garage doors installed, I went with a high lift system. The tracks are basically at my ceiling and out of the way. I know you can get conversion kits that will do the same thing to existing tracks. You may need to confirm that your opener has enough power.
