  • EMT Net Frame - Why build 3D vs. 2D?

I've already received my 7.7' x 10' impact screen and am ready to build my frame. I think I'm going to go with EMT with the top bar anchored to my ceiling and the bottom bar anchored laterally against my concrete slab that has about a 1/2' rise from the floor. I would like to avoid floor anchors but wouldn't mind using them if I had to. My question ultimately is why do most plans call for this 3D rectangle build? I've attached a pic from p3eps great post on his build. What is the back frame for? Why wouldn't I just build a simple 2D square with the screen and net backing attached ot it?

That’s all I built, basically an upside down U out of emt. I then have a piece of harbor freight mesh tarp above it for ceiling protection. It’s worked well for many, many years at this point.

I think the 3D frame makes the screen easier to mount and allows space for flex behind the impact screen. I don't have anything behind my screen except a foot of space before the wall. The 3D frame also allows for placement of speakers on the edges without worry of balls rolling into them.

On the sides of the room, I did the 2D frame so i had something to mount the curtains to so it could cover the walls and ceiling.

I did that one in 3D to give it some rigidity for pulling up to the ceiling. If I just had a U shape, it’d flap about when off the ground... and I couldn’t put a middle or bottom bar in to give it extra support.

Mine is completely rigid. There are foot pads on the bottom and the top. Really No difference in mounting the screen unless you are trying to attach it to the bottom. I did not put a cross brace since I do not want another pole the ball can possibly contact.

I did 3D as I wanted it completely free standing and to have side and ceiling protection/blackout.
