  • Basement Build - thank you

Big thank you to everyone that contributes to this great community!

    Quick facts:
    1. Uneekor QED
    2. BenQ TH671ST projector
    3. Birdie Screen (GungHo) and P2P imperfect hung together, 10x10 golf net behind
    4. Amazon hitting mats
    5. Turf from SGCproducts.ca
    6. Desktop from memory express with 2060 Super GPU
    7. DIY foam panels yet to be installed
    8. Monochrome cameras from Spinel USA
    9. Room dimensions are 21' x 14' 9" x 8' 7" (yes I've hit the ceiling with driver)

Planning this build went through quite a few iterations and you guys made it much easier and more fun. Will post more pics as the final touches get done.

A few more with the ceiling and wall pads built. I used latex foam from an old mattress, adhered to 1/2" MDF backing and covered with fabric and burlap. Then hung to the wood frame with picture hanging cleats.

Next steps are to get the flooring all set and taped together, then wallpaper and curtains to cover the windows

Hi everyone, here's a few recent photos showing more of the finishes applied to the space, including a computer monitor, bar top, keyboard shelf and curtains. Still a bit of trim work and wallpaper to finish but it's pretty much done.
If only the ceiling was 6" higher...oh well it's still a ton of fun.

timsiegle - great setup! I really liked this as you showed how to frame up the screen in an irregular area. A few questions.... 1.) which hitting mats did you use from Amazon? Do they hold a tee? 2.) Which turf did you buy from SGCProducts.ca? link please... 3.) You mention a 10x10 net behind the screen - where did you find that? Is that from Amazon as well, and how is that mounted - I don't really see in the photos? 4.) Finally the curtains along the sides - where are those from? Is there anything behind the curtains, and do they stop shanks without shattering windows behind?

I am dealing with a similar situation with a gambrel roof shed (barn roof) that starts at 7'8" of height, but up to 10', so I'll end up with 9'7" of total height and be able to swing driver. The problem is my screen will probably look small and need a lot of protection above it, as well as sides and irregular shape up to roof.

Thanks for posting the pics, excellent computer/screen setup too that you added. A really classy touch.

            Thank you for the questions!
            1. I used this one https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 it doesn't hold a tee. I wanted the mats to be as low profile as possible given the ceiling height so the total height is about 30mm or 1 3/16"
            2. I used the Paradise grass for the "rough" and the Poly Green Dark for the rest. It was the cheapest turf I could find that wasn't "green grass" type stuff and to be honest, it isn't the most true roll. It's good but I wouldn't use it for a dedicated putting green. https://www.sgcproducts.ca/artificial-grass-online/
            3. The net is this one https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it probably doesn't do much but it was an impulse purchase after reading forum posts late into the night so I used it anyways. The net and both screens are all hung together by tarp clips and bungees. One clip holds all 3 together.
            4. The curtains are from the clearance section of Fabricland and are pretty close to blackout. Behind the curtain I put a sheet of 1/4" pegboard stood on its end. The distance to the screen is ~8 feet so close enough that shanks still hit the screen but wanted the extra protection just in case.

What is your room width? I'm guessing you don't want to use a pre-built enclosure.

            Hi timsiegle ,

Thanks for the links... I see the mats are those that I looked at. The grass/turf looks great (very expensive, as it often is) - with a 10 year warranty - how's it holding up for you? I've looked at those exact same nets, but have had others tell me they use 'bird netting' for $10, I may give it a go, not sure it will hold. That's a new one on the Fabricland curtains - I'll have a look up there... 1/4" pegboard behind each curtain - wow, how tall is that, I guess it's more like a ramp effect, or a way to slow down anything coming toward the windows?

You're right on mine, my width is 11'4" or so and narrow enough that I don't want to use a pre-build. Instead I'm going to build it into the walls by attaching 1 1/2" angle iron up the walls and across the top, attaching the screen directly to that, with netting draping above it and curtains to side. Since my walls are without wallboard installed - I can insert extra studs in the area of 6"-11" from the back wall (to try to get as much distance - ball to screen that I can get). Again, I'll be pushing it to get over 8' from ball->screen, and 6' back to my R10 unit which will be recessed into the back wall. My length is 15'4" - going to be a tight fit - but I have to make do with what I have - I had a contractor quote me over $5k to add 5' of length to this shed, and I don't have that in my budget, instead I'll be putting more of that into the Sim room inside (considering skylight), big screen TV on one wall, likely connected to the computer, and hopefully 4k projection - if I can pickup a reduced price/clearance unit somewhere.... hope to get most of it done and hitting balls in the next few weeks.

Just hope it comes out 1/2 as nice as what you have here...

The turf is holding up great, it doesn't see a ton of traffic, mostly just for looks but worth it I think for the fit and finish of things. Costs for each have gone up about $1/sf since I bought it so it was a bit easier to stomach before.
The peg board is a 4'x8' sheet that stands tall behind the curtain. If a ball hits it, it will protect the window but I haven't had a shank high enough yet that would have hit the window, just the wall portion below it. It's just 1 sheet, not covering the entire window because you'd have to somehow shank a ball at 90 degrees to not hit the peg board.

I was going to use angle iron, but didn't for a couple reasons. 1. The eye-screws were much cheaper than angle iron and 2. Angle iron has sharp edges so in the long run it might cut through the ball bungees.
Good luck with your build! Post some pictures as you go
        Working...
