  • Starting New Sim Build in Shed

I'm starting a new sim build and browsing this site for info. I'm finding great detail but having a bit of trouble finding some comprehensive guides to dimensions/etc - though I'm seeing lots of references to calculator pages, so I'll keep looking.

We bought the house a couple of years ago, and the previous owner was a contractor with a very nice 2,400 sqft heated shed. I've got a ton of space but the ceilings are too tall for a mounted projector, so I'll have to do a floor mount. I'm thinking I'll do a ~10x15 enclosure, and I'm looking for specific detail on screen dimensions and enclosure specs. I appreciate any advice or if you can point me in the right direction!

Prob gonna need the room dimensions in order to get meaningful feedback.

Thanks. It's an open space shed... an FBI building that's 40' x 60' with a ~25' ceiling. I have other things in there (small wood shop, exercise equipment, kids bikes/etc, shelving, that kind of thing). So, I really need to put some sort of "bay" in for the simulator.

15' isnt too high. You could do a drop for your projector. Really it comes down to what kind of system you plan on using and if you also plan for the space to be able to accommodate both left and right-handed golfers. Personally if I had that amount of space you have I would do the following.

I'd dedicare roughly 18-20 feet of width to the space (so that I could have my bag(s) or friend's bags on either side of the hitting area. I'd have around a 15-16 foot width screen at 10 feet high off the wall by around 1.5-2 feet. Build a tension screen with and EMT Cage and since its an open area, you don't have to close it in if you don't want to. With the extra 1-2.5 feet on either side of the screen you could have speakers there or perhaps some curtains.

Above the impact screen, since you have such a nice height I'd do some netting that starts at the top of the impact screen and goes up to your 15' height ceilings at an angle to catch any flop shots.

As for hitting area (again because you have ample height, I'd build a platform with sim grass/stance grass and a hitting strip in the middle (Either a Fiberbuilt 1'x3', or a DivotAction strip)

For a launch monitor, right now there is a good deal on Mevo+ which is Radar based launch monitor for $1,800 from GungHoGolf. Or if your budget allows, I really like the Uneekor EyeXO as its camera based and can be mounted on the ceiling (again with your set up, you will need to do a drop down to 10') From there it just comes down to a computer to run the software and any add-on's you might want like TGC2019 or the proprietary software from Uneekor...

Hope that helps. Again, I'm looking at your space and saying, well you have tons of it, might as well make it the best it can be!

I agree with SkeetShooter on the ceiling mounted projector. 15 feet is not too high at all. Get a mount that extends down a bit (or build your own) and then get a projector with some considerable vertical offset. You'll be much happier with that than a floor mount.

What's your budget? That's a major factor in your choice of launch monitor.

Thanks! That's great input. I have a ton of space, but I want to make sure I don't crowd out functionality for other things (workout area, kids stuff, shelving, lawn equipment, etc). So, I have flexibility, but probably need to think that through a bit more... I had tentatively allocated ~15x15. Perhaps things will open up once I get out there and clean the clutter!

What do you guys suggest for turf (not the hitting mat, but the rest of the flooring)? I've heard most people just get turf from a big box store, but I wasn't sure how you laid it - would assume it's not a good idea to simply put it down on top of concrete floor?

I just did mine and put stall mat (3/4”) the 3/4” Eva foam and then putting turf from a local store on top. I just hair it down and it stays fine. Cut the hitting strip in after you lay all down so you have a nice consistent cut all the way through (I just used a razor for all the cuts, it was pretty easy)

Thanks - I ordered 3/4" interlocking gym mats and plan to put box store turf over the top (may use a bit of carpet tape to give it a touch of structure on the floor). I have a duramat hitting mat for now, but I'm looking at a Fiberbuilt or DivotAction. Went with an 8.5' x 13' cage from Carl's with a premium screen and archery net that will attach to the ceiling. Got a SkyTrak and love it so far. Don't have the cage/screen set up yet, so I'm using it with a basic hitting net. I it everything ~25yrd short at first, got frustrated, and read about "Indoor Swing Syndrome." Sure enough, everything leveled out on day two!
