  • Sound disturbance concern

My build is in my garage and I use it often enough. Just had an au pair move into the room above the garage and I'm somewhat concerned about sound disturbance. I unscientifically recorded the sound of me hitting driver using the Voice Memo app on an iPhone 12. The iPhone phone was mounted on I tripod in the room above the garage.

This is what it sounded like :

Hoping it wont be an issue.

I have a garage setup as well and my daughters room is above/adjacent to it. I can hear it from her room but if we have a white noise sound machine or vent fan running in her room she doesn't seem to notice it.

I can't see your setup to know if you have anything in your garage to dampen the sound. The more things to dampen the sound the better, i.e., blackout side curtains, foam ceiling protection overhead. The type of impact screen can make a difference too. Some of the higher quality ones naturally will deaden some of the noise.

You could look to have insulation blow into the walls and ceiling of the garage. I did that to the wall of my daughters room that faces the garage. It helped with sound but also improved the overall temperature of her room with better insulation so it was worth it to me.

In general you won't be able to get rid of all sound from the garage. The lower frequencies will vibrate through the wood studs and joists and can be heard. What you're really trying to get rid of or reduce are the mid/higher frequencies. If you can do that successfully you'll just be left with a very quiet thud that won't bother most people.

completely agree with rdeyer, you wont get rid of the low frequency noise. I have a fully soundproofed garage and you can still hear the thud noise in house it registers 40dbs (75 in the sim). I have a par2pro high quality SQ screen but it still causes reverbs which travels through the structure. I don't know the construction of your garage etc but its highly likely your neighbour will hear it. It will be the same for irons too not just driver. The best thing to do is have a chat with the neighbour. Lots of people try guessing on here whether there sims causes a disturbance but until you speak to the neighbour (or they come an tell you) then you wont really know for sure

I don't have neighbors within proximity to the house that would be of concern here. I just have a new au pair who is now living above my sim. My garage is attached to the house and to date I haven't had any complaints of sound yet from wifey but she does not sleep above the garage. I have the Par2Pro SQ Raw screen as well as curtains, netting, and an insulated garage however welcoming all suggestions to make the environment further complaint-proof. I'm curious about additional ceiling protection as perhaps a way of dulling the sound even further.

Does anyone worry about the impact of sound on the golfer as opposed to others? If you are using a loud screen in a confined area should we be wearing hearing protection as if we were at an indoor pistol range or something? Has anyone actually done this . . . admittedly it would reduce the fun factor quite a bit.
