  • Simulator Build Questions

Building a new home with space to place a new simulator. Looking for thoughts and suggestions. Ceilings are 9 foot 9 inches. Will have approximately 17 feet of width however due to the HVAC duck and beam only 14' of 9'9" width. Will use the space under the HVAC duct to set up TV/Computer stand bags etc. Have over 32 feet of length. Simulator is set up next to a TV viewing area and bar so you can hit then go sit at the bar. There will be additional open space at 9' of height on either side so centered righty/lefty swinging should be fine.

Plan is to buy a Carls Pro 8.5x 13x5 enclosure providing a 16:10 aspect ratio screen. The Carls pro enclosure height is 8'10" with an 8' high screen. Could get it custom made to add height but assume then lose full screen projection effect. Not sure how safety baffles would impact projection or if I would need them. Have heard the Carl's enclosures have bounceback issues.

Thinking about a UNeekor Eye XO and the Ben Q LU935ST projector which has 5500 lumens and a golf mode. Based on the screen size of 181" looks like a 10'-10" projector placement to fill the screen. Not sure I need 4K and this projector is suppose to provide a great picture. Having projector relatively centered over hitting area will avoid shadows and be out of the way. I have no experience with projectors so don't know if this projector can be mounted in order to project image under the five foot enclosure and still fill the screen.

Can place UNeekor XO at 6.5 feet and then establish hitting area at 10 feet. Could also adjust hitting area a foot or so either way.

Looking at the fiberbuilt grass and or player preferred customized center combo putting and mats for a floor. Pro putt systems also makes a floor or may make my own. Not sure how well the fiberbuilt putting combo putting surface will absorb shots off the screen. Can get fiberbuilt to make it wide enough to place enclosure on top of it to avoid losing the two inches of height.

Will get side nets for the enclosures to catch shanks when needed and can be taken down so my wife doesn't have to look at them.

    Haven't researched computers/stands yet.

Questions...Can the Ben Q projector with a 60 percent vertical offset project under the 5 foot enclosure extension and fill the screen in 16:10? Or will the enclosure prevent it. Is there a way to calculate how low the projector would need to be mounted? And how low can it be mounted before it impacts you swinging underneath it?

Can the Carl's pro enclosure be adjusted to avoid excessive bounceback?

Is there a preference between the fiberbuilt grass or player preferred series? Seems as if the player preferred would be better for simulator numbers and putting but has a less durable stance surface and is tougher on joints. I am 62.

Not sure about lighting. With BenQ's 5500 lumens area will be pretty well lit with the projector. The downstairs area will have canned lighting thruout. Plan to put them on switches to control those over the simulator area. Any suggestions?

Is it okay to place a soundbar behind the enclosure? May use the enclosure to watch a movie or game. Will place enclosure 15 to18 inches from wall which will be hidden by bump out of the design.

Does having the uneekor three and half feet in front bother anyone having it there? Know it won't be hit but just the view of it. Could switch to reg Uneekor but don't like idea of marked balls.

Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions of what I should change or went off track.

let me answer a few of your questions

on the enclosure. you want it 9 ft tall. That way you can also project a 12 x 9 image. Dont concern yourself with filling the entire screen. alway get the largest screen possible, You will typically have some white space on sides or top/bottom. that way you can do both 16:9 and 4:3 ratio.

you can do 5 ft sides/top and either do angled side nets or curtains to extend out another 5 ft or so if you want full protection.

bouceback can be an issue. There are enclosures with adjustable screens. Will send them to you.

Projector can easily be mounted to project on enclosure. Just need right ceiling mount to angle properly. If you dont want to spend that muich money on projector look at the benq th671. About the same throw distance and only 700 dollars I think it 3200 lumems.

I slide my sound bar under the screen and push up against the back wall and take out when watching movies. Screen typically sites 12" off back wall.

On your floorplan which wall is for the enclosure. Get me that info and I will get you a layout

    thx

regarding the mat - I used the fiberbuilt grass for ~9 months and and just got the player preferred a couple weeks ago. In my opinion, the preferred is much better - more real feel/flight and I'd also say that I haven't had any wrist problems or anything. Definitely don't have any more (or less) soreness between the two so far and I played probably 20-30 rounds on it already.

re: eyexo - I have that set up too. i don't even notice its in front of me so its no bother at all and i haven't come close to hitting it. Haven't used others but am real happy with eyexo.

good luck on your build, these things are a lot of fun!!

Chip...Thanks for the response. The bottom right wall on the floorplan will house the simulator. Will fit in between the HVAC duct and the beam. How does a 4:3 aspect ratio compare to a full screen 16:10 aspect ratio immersion wise?

Aspect ratio is a matter of preference. I prefer the fuller screen look of 4:3 ratio. 4:3 gives you a larger overall image. for example is you do a 144 screen its 108 high in 4:3, but only 90 high in 16:10. you loose 18" of image. The bottom line is " get the biggest screen possible. Regardless of aspect ratio. if you could do a 168 x 108 screen, that would be close to a perfect 16:10 ratio
