  • Mounting to ceiling

I'm mounting a sliding rail for the projector spanning two 2" ceiling rafters. What's the proper way to screw into these? I.E best way to resist cracking. 1. Drill holes and screw right into them. 2. Drill larger holes for expansion anchors. 3. Screw vertical joist between the rafters and screw load into that.

Its definitely not #2. I don't know how much weight you are going to hang.

Prob 30lb max. Mounted to 2 rafters so 15lb load on each rafter. I think I've decided to strong tie a 4x4 between the two rafters and mount the rail to that. And add vertical hangers to the top beam.

Or should I not touch existing rafters? Add a tie on opposite side of rafter, if there's room for screws, and mount to that? Maybe construction forum would be better place for this.

You are wanting to install a rail that will be secured on each end to a rafter? Only 30 lb. total weight? Use a few 2.5 or 3 inch screws through the drywall and into the rafter and be done.

I should have been specific. The rail has predrilled holes on both sides 2" apart, running the length of the rail. And just discovered they don't line up to the 2 rafters. So it must be mounted to at least a 4x4. The screws would be too close to the sides of a 2x4 and will probably split. So I'll screw directly into the 4x4. I was more worried about compromising the rafter integrity, not about holding the load. But I'm overthinking, load bearing ties are routinely mounted to rafters. Think I'm good.
