    Happy Holidays, All. As I patiently await the arrival of my GCQuad (ordered 11/19, should ship next week?!?!), I thought I would share my take on a manually retractable hitting screen that I built recently. My wife insisted that the garage still be useable for vehicles during the winter, so I had to come up with something.

    The screen is a 12 x 9 premium screen from Carl's. It is mounted to the ceiling using 14 feet of perforated-slotted angle bracket. The bottom of the screen is currently zip-tied to a 14' piece of fiberglass rod that previously supported the sides of my golf net from Amazon. I originally planned on using a piece of metal tubing but that proved too heavy and rigid, causing some bounceback issues that the lighter and more flexible fiberglass rod solves (I imagine a similarly sized piece of PVC would also work). Attaching only the edges of the screen to the rod seems to work best, leaving the middle 6 feet or so unattached to again help with bounceback. The current result is balls bouncing back softly, rolling to the feet of the golfer, regardless of the club being hit.

    Retractability is achieved through the use of some small shackles, pulleys, and paracord. It is surprisingly easy to lift up and drop down, and I can transform the garage from golf to car-ready in just a minute or two.

    Ceiling protection is provided by 3/4" puzzle mat glued to 1/4" plywood that is then screwed to 1/2" plywood attached through the drywall ceiling to the joists and finished with 1.5" MDF trim painted to match.

    Other improvements include replacing my old overhead garage door opener with a wall-mounted jack drive opener. This allows better placement of the projector (GT1090HDR) further away from the golfer.

      Hi there. Sorry for just now seeing this question. I used paracord tied to a fiberglass rod that is attached to the bottom of the screen. On the outer edges of the screen, the paracord is "woven" in and out of the grommets to help keep things straight when raising the screen. A series of shackles and pulleys direct the paracord to the left side of the screen at the ceiling. This can be seen in one of the photos. I braided the 3 separate paracord strands (left, center, right side of screen) into a single strand and tie this off to a rope cleat screwed into a wall stud when the screen is retracted. The screen raises by manually pulling on the cord.
