  • Tight Garage Build

    Hi GSF!
Been a long time lurker and have finally decided to move forward with my garage build.

Hoping to get your thoughts on this proposed enclosure. I have been bouncing ideas off the good folks at Carl's Place (they are extremely helpful!).

I have 8FT ceiling, am looking to do a cut out above the hitting area to get some more clearance.

For the enclosure, the team at Carl's place is not recommending I go with a 90" height. I'm losing a bit of clearance due to new floors being put in.

Their main concern is safety and chances of the ball hitting the top of the enclosure. I was thinking of moving up my tee position from their recommended 10' to perhaps 7' from the screen to reduce the risk.

My proposed enclosure would be 90" H x 100-117"W x 4' Depth. Would love to hear your thoughts as I'm sure this is a common issue. Also thoughts on whether this is too small and I should seek an alternative?

attached is a proposed layout. have no issues length and width wise of the area.

    Thanks!

    - Oh boy, that's tight (width wise). I have 11'5" width and it feels tight, but maybe you have open area on one side, are you left-handed?

It is pretty unnerving when you have a ball ricochet back at you. It will happen when you hit a driver really low. Even with all of the corner padding, etc., an occasional mishit can bounce around. My Carl's Place enclosure is 8'6 high (I have 12'0 ceilings but) x 10'0 wide x 5'0 deep. I am hitting about 12'0 from my screen. I am on the right side bay of a garage that is 20'0 wide in total. The left side is totally open (remove car when hitting). I am a decent player and hit the occasional "bad" shot. The more room you have, the "safer" it is.

Thanks gents, will definitely look into maximizing my width to at least 10' since I have some flexibility.

        Brettster - I am a righty.

For the fellow tight builders out there, have you had any issues with a less than 8' height for an enclosure? Where are you hitting from?

Hi eightiron604 i have 7 foot ceilings in my garage and during the summer I has the net in garage, a few feet behind garage door opening and I would swing outside garage into net. But I plan on replacing roof on the garage and raising the walls up to 10 feet then add a new roof so I can swing inside. I will be tight as well as the garage is only 11x18.

The attache picture was my setup last fall. I hung projector outside garage on top of door opening. I could have the it set up in 10 minutes but still a bit of a pain and unworkable in New England winters

Thank Brettster I will need to keep the garage door as it will function as a garage some of the time. I will probably raise the walls with 9 ft studs, currently there are 6 foot studs in there this will give me about 3 more feet of space and close to 9 1/2 to 10 feet in overall height as the studs sit on a small cement footwall and sill and the top plate will bring the ceiling height where the rafters are

One other thing to keep in mind. When you build the enclosure, you need room to move it around as you assemble the pipe frame. I assembled my 8'6 x 10'0 wide frame inside of a 20'0 x 20'0 x 12'0 high garage. I felt somewhat cramped putting it together (sort of). I had plenty of room to work, but I thought how crazy it would be to build a bigger enclosure in smaller area. I did do it myself, which made it more difficult.
