Protect wall behind impact screen

I just thought I’d share a solution that seems to be working well for me. I have a carls impact screen enclosure, and they recommend fairly significant space behind the screen so you aren’t hitting your wall. Partly due to poor planning but also due to space restraints I could only have 6-10 inches, which after a year of use, created some holes in my wall. (I would also cringe every time I heard it hit the wall, which would frustrate me and probably hurt my playing ability).

Anyways, I bought this (https://www.mattressfirm.com/lucid/3...mfi130457.html) last week and hung it on my wall using 1/4 inch screw hooks and mini bungee cords). It’s a game changer. I bought a king size, but I honestly could have gotten away with the twin (99% of shots are pretty close to center).

I’m sure there are other solutions, but if you’re in a similar predicament, I can’t recommend it enough.

My screen is 16x9 and I have two king sized of these between the wall and screen. I’m 8 inches. Just a word of warning, the mattress eventually wore through so I put another screen behind the one i hit into.

I have an 8'6 x 10'0 Carl's enclosure. I am about 12" from the wall, but I doubled up my screen with archery netting. I have the same archery netting in an outside hitting area. It will gobble up 165mph ball speed like it's nothing. I put it behind my screen to help with bounce back and I may want to move my enclosure back another 2-3" (although it's not completely necessary).

Th3m1lkm0n5t3r - sounds like exactly what I need… can you put pics up of your mounting techniques and include links of the parts you used to mount?

also, please let us know - does it drop the ball immediately? Is there any bounce back? I have a HD sound blocking blanket I was hoping to use - but if these are better and they do NOT stain the back of the screen then I would choose these!

mthunt - I’m hoping to go with 6” to back wall - you have 8” though and have worn right through this mattress! What can I do? You say it wore all the way through - must have been in one spot then?

It was my kid that wore through but he has 180 ball speed. Anything else you can add (netting, another screen) will help.

mthunt - another guy on FB recommended these 4 layers 1.) impact screen, 2.) black velvet blackout curtain, 3.) heavy duty blanket, 4.) archery netting. He also recommends just zip ties through all 4 layers and hung over a tension wire at the top... Almost seems to simple to believe - but I'm almost in a position to try this out. He says the whole thing is 1/2" thick, which would even allow me room to add one of these King Mattresses behind for even more protection.

One thing I'm considering adding is a Duvet Cover to place the heavy duty moving/sound blanket inside of because it's black and I don't want any coloring staining the back of my impact screen. Did you have anything stain onto the back of your screen from placing this memory foam mattress where the ball impacts were hitting the screen? Worried about damaging the screen and not able to ever turn it around to use the other side?

How did you hang your 2 Memory Foam king size mattresses? Do you have a pic, I'm still not sure the best way to hang something that heavy and don't think it can hang on it's own without tearing? Maybe stick it into the Duvet Cover and put rivets through both duvet cover/Memory Foam Mattress and hang that with bungees?

Yeah, I'll never get to 180 ball speed, I'm usually at 150 max with 105 club head speed.

Brettster I screwed the top of the two mattresses between two pieces of wood and hung it all with rope. I'll post a pic here.

It's upside down but you can see Brettster It looks like i just screwed it to a 2x4. That's two Kings.

Thanks mthunt - I see you screwed it between (2) 8' or 10' 2x4s. 2 King size Memory Foam mattress toppers. I'm not sure I really need to cover the entire width of 10' screen area and so thinking about maybe 1 King size in the hitting area would do it? Also, I just bought a white Duvet cover for the Heavy Duty Sound/Moving blanket, so I can place that directly behind the screen, with the black moving blanket inside the Duvet cover - hopefully that will not allow any marking to the back of my screen from everything behind it.

mthunt - do you notice the 'pink' coloring showing through your screen where the Mattress Toppers are when projecting an image? Going to be an experiment, it sounds like...

Nothing shows through. My screen is wide so I put two toppers. They are 3 inches thick.

So, you have 2 screens, then the king mattresses? Which 2 screens are they, is one archery netting? I'll be starting out with 1 HD Sound/moving blanket inside of the Duvet Cover hanging behind... but then I might buy a 10'x8' black velvet curtain to place behind all of it, to make the white/screen stand out, as someone mentioned doing on FB. I think they had an archery screen behind that as one last 'barrier', they said all these screens fit in about 1/2" of thickness! They also thought I could get away with 6" screen to wall just fine.

I have plenty of studs (4 of them on both sides) I placed starting at 4 1/2" away from wall; going to about 10" away from the wall, so I can adjust accordingly. At this point, I'm thinking eyebolts screwed directly in, but have also been told that angle-iron is good on the sides... I just don't think I want that metal back there, even on the sides. I do have one spot (back/right about 5' high) that is where I mounted a 2x4 brace that is about 2' long attached to the side wall, it sticks out almost 3" as it's bolted to another 2x4 behind it - I'm thinking I'll cover that completely in Memory Foam mattress material (maybe even 4" thick), and 'pray'. It's almost like that post up here that mentions a concrete step sitting out away from the back wall - but only at the base - where mine is at about the exact spot of a well hit shot (though way right of center - unfortunately I'm offset to the right anyway, so if I get too worried, I may remove that brace completely!

I don't have netting. The screen in Front is the SQ from par2pro and the one behind it is the original from par2pro.

ok, thanks mthunt - I definitely will not have 2 high quality screens, I have one 801 screen (raw) which I will supplement with all the backing... I hope that doesn't mean that anything behind the 1 single screen will wear through (fingers crossed).

@Th3m1lkm0n5t3r I have a similar situation need to get as close to wall as possible. Was going to do my Carls impact screen, then an inch or so then hang an area rug (now considering a heavy moving blanket after reading all this, then another inch then a 4" thick bed memory topper pad against wall. Thoughts on bounce back or sound? I plan to leave it looser towards bottom so if gives some. thanks

Should be good mkmcna0078 - the high quality impact screen and anything behind will help. Right now I have nothing behind, and 8" to wall and my 801 screen (3 layer) pretty much knocks the ball down immediately. Let us know how it goes.
