  • New Simulator Build - Backyard Structure

I just started a simulator build which will take approximately 3 months. Thanks to all of the contributors to this forum for inspiration and advice. After considering the garage (just too small) I am building it in my backyard - approximately 200 feet from our house. The building will be 20X30x10 and will also function as a home theatre and a second home office. I am a lefty and most of my friends are righty’s. Given the size of the structure I had to go through a variance adjustment committee for approval as well as securing the necessary permit. I started this process in September and we are just pouring concrete today to give some sense of how long these things can take. We also had some covid-related and weather delays (I’m in Canada).

I am running power and wired internet out to the shed - it will be insulated and will be installing a mini-split. I am on septic system and can’t really run plumbing so we are putting in a small bathroom with a composting toilet. I am nowhere near handy so I am working with a local contractor on this who has been great - they helped with the design and engineering, approvals, and are acting as the general contractor - and my simulator is being installed by InHome Golf. They are installing a Uneekor QED which will work for both sides of the ball and building a 16X9 screen with enclosure. I am envious of those who have the ability to build their own systems but it would be a struggle for me.

I will post some periodic updates as well as sim-related specifics later on. There will likely be some snags in the process but hopefully some of the information will be as useful to someone as this forum has been for me.

Congrats on getting this build started. Why did you go with the QED over the EyeXO?

Thanks - I tried both and was happy with the QED - I am not as fussed over the ball issue.

I hear the TP5 pix is a good alternative for balls that work with QED if you want something more higher quality. Looking forward to the progress.

Very exciting! Glad to hear you are breaking ground so to speak. Looks like a great design!

Carlisle66 Congrats!!! Looks great, quite a lot of space. I’m finishing off an existing 12’x16’ shed myself, about as small/tight on space as I would recommend…

Look promising. I would go higher than 10 feet if you can. It really helps if you can go to say 12 feet with indoor swing syndrome.

Thank you - I have a quasi cathedral ceiling that goes up to 13 feet in the centre of the room, and I have 20 feet wide so helpfully this wont feel too closed in.

Building is done including electrical and mini-split. Waiting for A/V and then sim install in a couple of weeks.

Looks great! It's a real luxury to have that much space available, I'm super jealous. I'm planning a 12'x16' building along the lines of what Brettster has.

Our sim builds are pretty similar. Mine is 20'x32'x11' and I have flat ceilings. Both lefty and righty will be able to swing comfortably in there. But I have to ask, what kind of protection do you have on that window on the right side? I've seen many mishits hit about that exact spot in my room so I hope you have something for it.

Thanks for the post - I will have 7’ extendible curtains on both sides that should cover it, as the screen is 16’ and the interior is 18.8’. The window is to maintain symmetry of the design from the outside.
