cut old driving range mat to install the holy Grail

Hi What is the best why to cut and old driving range mat to install the holy grail hitting strip? What tool would be best to cut the mat with, a sawzall, jigsaw?

Also it looks like the mat I have is 1" tall will measure middle of mat where cutout is to ensure height. But if mat sits approximately 3/8 lower what is the best way to make it level if needed.

Thanks, sim build is getting closer

Something like a Fein oscillating tool (or one of the thousands of copies) works pretty well.

Rlefig - I use something called a 'Fatso' carpet cutting knife for that (from Home Depot). I also supplement that with a Stanley razor / xacto knife... Oscillating tool may help if it's really, really thick, but even these razor knives can cut through pretty thick material with a few passes.

        Here's the Fatso, $5:

Some of them have a metal mesh for reinforcement and that's where the oscillating tool comes in handy.
