  • New Garage Build: Retractable Screen Size Help

Slowly but surely converting my garage into a simulator. I am at the screen stage right now. Because I have to be able to still park a car in the garage, the screen needs to retract. I think I have two options and would like help on which option would be better. Distance from the hitting mat can be anywhere from 13 to 8 feet to the screen, with plenty of space behind the screen. Using a BLP as my sim device. Moving from a portable net to a impact screen and projector.

    Option A

Fit the screen inside of the garage door rails gives me screen size of 106"W x 126"H (up to).

    Option B

Screen will be below the garage door rails giving me a really wide screen. 136"W x 96"H. I would have to figure out some sort of hanging net or foam on the ceiling to catch sky shots.

Couple of diagrams attached to the post.

Both options will require some type of side curtains to catch any shanks.

I did have someone come give me a price for high lift garage rails, but it was about $1,600! Because of the steeper angle, it would also require a stronger spring to lift up the door. The door is hurricane rated.

    Thanks everyone for you ideas!

That cost seems quite high for a single door. Not sure if the hurricane rating affects anything, but I would suggest going to garagejournal and ask there if anyone in your area does side jobs. that's what i did and I paid way less than that to do two garage doors.

I would lean towards the horizontal Option B, as that should fit better with more projectors and sim software.
If you're using the whole width you could attach the screen to the walls instead of the ceiling if that's easier. There are some more expensive motorized retractable kits like HomeCourse or Par2Pro/SportScreen, or you could DIY it with cheaper parts.
If you have the space on the size you could also do like a "swinging door" with hinges on one side and fold the whole screen/frame up against the side wall when not in use.

I hung a screen following option B. I ran 1/8" aircraft cable across my garage right at the 8' height mark and have a 156" x 93" impact screen under my garage door rails with some mesh tarp to catch shanks on the sides and top. It's kind of a cheaper beta version of what I ultimately want which will be nicer cloth walls and ceiling but it works for now. Only club that flies over the screen is if I hit my SW full and still it just hits the top mesh and drops. No real issues.

MrPunkin - would you be willing to share a few photos of how you set up your screen and nets? This would be the much more affordable option.
How does the image look from your projector?

          Thanks!!
