  • Garage Golf 2.0

    Hello,

I've had a Skytrak + Archery net set-up for about 1 year but just moved 2 weeks ago so decided to go for a proper set-up rather than hitting golf balls in my garage with bikes, wheel barrows & work bench all in close proximity! I have a 6m/20ft square garage, only 2.5m high but will come on to the ceiling mods later. The screen is a 3m square net so wrapped it under and tightened with rope/tie-wraps. I built some frames and added 12mm underlay with a nylon cover and the screen is pretty much done!

I need to remove 3 cross members from the Fink roof trusses, but will be adding purlins, double skinning the outer 2 and adding some additional struts as per the advice from a structural engineer. Next job cladding the walls between the Cotswold pillars with reclaimed pallets before building a 4-seater l-shaped sofa and adding beer fridge etc... before I sort out the roof and line the ceiling, I should have 10ft + for my driver follow through. Will keep the updated coming.

    Hi Podcast,

'I need to remove 3 cross members from the Fink roof trusses, but will be adding purlins, double skinning the outer 2 and adding some additional struts as per the advice from a structural engineer.'

This sounds exactly what I need to do (and posted earlier). Any chance you could given me a more detailed view of your design? Do you have any drawings?

    Thanks,

    Andy

      Hi Andy,

I only have a scan of the sketch from the guy, but will knock up some drawings & share. Progressing with the build as below. Astro turf turn up next week so might get the trusses sorted this weekend.

Andy, here's the plan for the trusses. My garage has 11 trusses in total & I'll be altering the 5/6/7th and strengthening the 4/8th either side with purlins running horizontally across the middle 5 trusses. Trusses 4/8 I'll be doubling the thickness of the bottom span whilst adding extra vertical trusses plus 2 diagonal linking all the purlins. Trusses 5,6/7 will have a simple truss 2ft higher up and all joints on trusses 4 * 8 will have plywood gussets glued/screwed into the trusses & purlins along with 5/6/7 for the new higher span. Hope it makes sense and will likely be the strongest part of the roof! New trusses will be C16/24 load-bearing grade 35mm x 70mm to match the current trusses and the purlins will 6' x 2' and screwed into each of the trusses via angle brackets as the pass each truss as as I said butting into gusset plates, 10mm ply.

Podcast - oh that's cool what you're doing with Trusses... reminds me of my studies I did of the gambrel roof before I cut down my ceiling Joists in the shed! You can see it documented here:
Hi Everyone, I'm starting this post as a way to keep myself accountable. The tasks are huge, but not insurmountable as I'm having to do all my build work by myself. Contractors are either non-existent in this post-pandemic marketplace, or they have so much work they are 3 months out! I'll be posting up here as I make

        Good luck
