  • Does your projector run ceiling to floor? 16:9 Help.

Looking for projector and screen size help. I have 9 foot ceilings and am wondering if I mount a retractable screen, I now am losing a few inches at the top. Is that a big deal? also Id like to get a 10 foot wide screen, but again Im wondering how a 4:3 or 16:9 would look. I keep hearing don't stray from 16:9 or you lose resolution.

I have the space to do 8x12, but then what happens to the extra space of the retractable screen? Black bars on top/bottom? lFWIW, Im looking at the Benq TH671ST.

If you can do 16:9 then go for it. Don’t worry about the height and just create a custom resolution.

My screen will be about 10 high and 11 feet wide, so very close to 1:1 ratio. I know you can use custom settings to do 1080 by 1080, would a 4k resolution be possible with this ratio? I spent about $1,500 on a laptop and projector (671st) and I'm trying to decide if I want to return both and spend more to go 4k. Thank you in

Instead of changing the first number for reducing the width you can reduce the second number to change the height. Make sure the image fits the width and keep reducing the second number until the height fits your setup. Something like 1920x 960 instead of 1920x1080.

Thanks for the info. I now realize I can't do 16:9. I can do 10 to 12 feet width max.
You re saying just get the biggest screen I can, and then custom resolution to make it work? that would be a 9 x 10, or 9 x12 screen. Would the 9x10 image be distorted at all?

That's the beauty of a custom resolution. We are not stretching or shrinking the image. We are chopping the image edges so they are not distorted.

I do not get all the way to the ceiling, but I am right down to the floor. Makes for great realism. I see no difference being a few inches below my screen top. I would say width over height if you needed to choose. That said, custom resolution is the way to go as others have mentioned. There are several great tutorials on how to do it on this site if you search a bit, including the one above in post #2.
