  • Is it possible to use an 8' ceiling?

    Hi all,

Ordered my last missing piece for my SIM. Going to start building. The only down fall is my basement ceiling is only 8' high. Am I dreaming that I can build it in there? I'm only 5'11 and I might have a problem with my driver but I still have a lot of other clubs I can use. Does anyone have an 8' ceiling that they are using? I would like to put it in the garage, but too cold and wet, as well as the family wants to watch movies on the screen.

    Cheers

I'm 6"4". My garage ceiling is 9". When swinging driver, I was hitting the ceiling. I laid out my dimensions, center, distance from screen, distance to r10. Then I swung away. Looked at the dents in drywall and cut out a rectangle recess int the ceiling joists. Gained another 7 inches and now it's doable. Depending on the orientation of the joists it can be a simple modification, but I built my house and I'm a contractor, so I knew exactly how to accomplish without compromising the structural integrity. So,I would venture to guess it would not work out to well.Just my 2 cents.

I'm 5'11" and 8' is too tight with driver for me. You may have a flatter swing. I would take a hybrid or a long iron and do a nice slow backswing and follow through and intentionally extend. Have someone watch and tell you if you are close to the ceiling. You don't want it in your brain that you are in a tight area. It will affect your swing. You need to feel comfortable taking a full swing without worrying about hitting something.

Raising the ceiling in a particular area would typically require a contractor, but depending what you have overhead, might be a viable option. Especially if the ceiling joists are parallel to the direction you are hitting and it's just an attic overhead. A contractor could frame a box for your driver at the top of the backswing and finish.

      Just my humble opinion.

larsdog makes a great point. Whether you can find a way to make it work, you need to ensure that you are comfortable swinging in such a confined space so that it doesn’t adversely affect your swing, I have much higher ceilings and when I first started swinging in my sim I was convinced I was going to hit a wall or a ceiling, even though I had plenty of room. It’s a well known issue that lots of people struggle with. Also consider who else might be using the sim - will it just be yourself or do you have friends who’s other sport is basketball

When you are doing your tests don’t forget your mat will be close to 2” thick. I’m 5’11” with a flat swing. I have an enclosure in my 9’6” garage and swing everything comfortably, but in my 8’6” basement I can barely swing a hybrid.

I have 94 inch clearance in the basement and I've been rocking it out for years. Not many can but not many are Wizard like.
7ft 10 inches anything is possible in the land of Wizard of Coz.

I'm 5'10" but with the same clearance. Could never get comfortable with anything longer than 6i/7i in the basement.

              That's impressive.

Wizard of Coz was once number 1 in TGC with 8 feet. Everyone is different. Give it a shot and see if your swing handles it. It's all you can do. However, you won't be able to have guests hit more than irons I imagine.

Thanks for the confidence. I watched your video and it doesn't look like you're holding back on your swings. Looking even more forward to getting it going. Cheers.

Have you swung clubs in your basement yet? I swung all over the place moving tape marks on the floor to make sure the space worked before I started building anything. Obviously, start with really SLOW swings!

Yes, tons of chalk (on shed floor) and I swung many, many times, as well as recorded the swing from multiple angles (on my phone) while swinging in the Garage which has a 9'6" clearance, just to see where I was at.

Would like to see your setup 7potato daddy when you're done.
