  • Projector question!

I’m sure this has been asked hundreds of times on this forum but I’m having trouble calculating what projector I’m going to need for my space.
I will be hanging projector from the ceiling above my hitting area approx 10 feet from screen . My space is approx 9 foot ceilings , and I am going to have an 8 foot by 8 foot screen. ( I know square is not ideal but it’s my only option .) I do not mind if there is a little black on the top or bottom of the projector. I would rather have the entire picture showing with some black border than have it zoomed in and cutting off part of the image.

Also wondering if anyone has a similar room size as me , if you have tried mounting a non short throw projector even further back (I have about 7 more feet behind me) . Or will my shadow be too displayed too much on the screen for this to even be possible? .

sorry for all the questions at once. I’m just hoping someone has similar dimensions as me so I can save some time and get it right the first time . Thanks in advance for any help!

Use this tool. It will get you pretty close. It will also give you an idea of how much of your screen will not be used.

I plugged this in using the short throw projector I have. My enclosure is 8'6 x 10'0. I don't think you will be happy with the size of the image. You can cover the width, but you will have large black bars at the top and bottom.

Hi and as Tom has mentioned, use projector central for all your calculations. I have mounted several projects exactly to their calculations and it is always incredibly accurate. As to your question on casting shadows, that will depend on how far you are from the screen. If your projector is mounted 10ft from the screen and you also stand 10ft behind you will obviously fine, but if your projector is mounted at 9ft you will only be able to go back a few ft before you cast shadows. if you are using a short throw projector like the Optoma GT1080 it will be more like 6ft from the screen for the image you are talking about.
