  • How to limit bounce back on retractable screen

    Hi all,

I have the metechs retractable screen setup with their provided screen. The roller system works great, but the screen itself seems to be pretty low quality. The bounce back off this thing is much stronger than I expected. I rarely hit hybrids or woods because they come back so fast it feels borderline dangerous. Im hitting from at least 10 ft away from the screen.

Since it’s a retractable screen I don’t currently use bungees or anything to adjust tension. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to limit the bounce back on a hanging screen?

I have the Metech roller, but a different screen. I do not have any issues with bounce back. How are you weighing the screen down?

I sewed a pocket at the bottom and have a 1/2 inch steel pipe in the pocket to weigh the screen down.

Yeah, that is the same thing I have in my screen. I have an eagle impact screen from gung ho golf. It really absorbs the shot and the ball just barely comes back. I think the metech screen is a lot lighter. Not sure what else you can do.

I was afraid of that. I was questioning the quality of the screen straight out of the box. It’s wearing out fast anyway so I will probably just deal with it until I need to replace it. Makes me concerned to let others use it though, because it really has a trampoline-like effect when using real balls. Thanks for helping to confirm it is likely the screen and not the setup.

I’m not sure if it would work, but you could try some thing lighter in the bottom. Maybe half inch PVC? Not sure if that would be heavy enough to weigh the screen down, but would probably cause less bounce back.

Do you have a 1/2 inch EMT as well in the bottom? The 10ft bar is 3lb right? How do you protect the bar from shots? Would you mind sharing your setup? I feel like i'm not entirely happy with mine :s

I have the exact same setup but not very happy with how much travel this gives to the ball behind. I've been wanting to try something heavier (ropes) but because it's not solid core, the rope bends and the screen ends up going further back where the ball is hitting.
I understand the more the screen will deform, the less bounce back you get but I haven't seen to find a good combo.

              Thank you for your help!

I use gutter guards that you can pick up from Lowe’s or Home Depot in front of the bar. They work pretty well if you wrap them in black fabric. If you just use them as is the golf balls will take chunks out of them when you hit a low stinger into them.

Very cool -- is it a dense foam or a more "cushy" foam? Where did you source the black fabric that you wrapped them in?
                  Thanks!

It’s fairly dense except around the edges. Wrapped them in the cheapest black tablecloth from amazon

Can you tell me what screen option you are using from METECH - Standard or Professional? I was thinking of getting the METECH option and due to a funky clearance issue need my fully retracted screen to clear 6" from the ceiling to an opened garage door. As a result, METECH recommended the standard option as it's thinner which will decrease the diameter.

I was using the standard screen from metechs, but I couldn’t stand it and am now using the birdie screen from gungho. The metech screen is definitely thinner than the one I use now. When I originally unpacked the metech setup I wondered if they actually sent me an impact screen because of how thin it was. If you need a thin screen the metech one may work for you.
