  • Interim / Piece by Piece build

Hey all - longtime reader, but brand new member & first-time poster!

I had a question that I think is a variation on a common theme: I finally raised the ceiling of my golf room high enough to take a comfortable swing. So I can now start building a sim setup.

The bad news is that raising the ceiling was not cheap. So, I need to build the sim out bit by bit, or just save up for the next few years.

I have a so-so hitting mat & a net. I’d like to get a launch monitor that has a driving range functionality & will let me do basic sim stuff while I save for the end-state setup. I have the newest iPhone, but the next newest non-work device in our house is a circa 2017 Microsoft surface. I don’t have a projector or a screen - I’ll be looking at results on a wall-mounted tv via screen mirroring (or on the surface if it works or maybe on a used iPad if I can find one that does the trick).

Based on the research I’ve done so far, I think a new or used Mevo+ probably is the best option since I can use the included iOS E6 package without additional subscription fees (or buying a gaming computer). Or maybe someone on here has something like an older GC2 that would do the trick.

But, as I said, I’m a newbie so would love to get the forum’s wisdom!

JPgolf122, looks like I am doing the same thing you are. I am currently building my enclosure frame, because my shop has 13-16 ceiling height, I have to build a mount for the projector, spotlights, and launch monitor (future upgrade). Final width depends on the projector I end up getting. I am going DYI on as much as I can to save money since it is coming out of my retirement account.

I too am going with Mevo+ to start out and a Optoma UHD35STx projector. Doing DYI panels and pads for the enclosure (found a seamstress). Carl's Place Premium screen. Using Putting turf from Turf Factory Direct (after getting samples) and a 5x5 Monster Mat. Not skimping on the PC, going with a Redux build, with 27" monitor with touchscreen frame. My budget was 11K, so far I am still under by a couple hundred. I will post some pics when I get frame up.

    Good luck! Happing parts hunting.
