  • Folding sim build using wood

I figured we can never have enough ideas for folding simulators since everyone wants more space while still maximizing the golf fun.

    A little background:
I looked for months at ideas but ultimately all of the ceilings in my house are 8ft and I wasn't going to cut into my ceilings just to play some golf indoors. I've been playing outdoors with a Spornia net but it wasn't flat and with it being hot in GA, I haven't used it in months. With that in mind, I've wanted a big shop to work on cars for a decade and felt like I've got enough saved up to make that happen. I had planned to make the shop 24x35 with 10 ft ceilings. While getting the concrete pad and retaining walls, a friend offered me a 12 ft tall car lift so the shop plans changed to 12 ft walls.

    The build:
I feel like I've only seen a dozen folding setups and maybe only a few that I actually liked but ultimately none that I felt I could really pull off with my shop and the tools at my disposal or the cost of what was built was so expensive that it just seemed cost prohibitive. Most builds these days use 1" EMT which really strikes me as a bit cheesy and cheap except it's not cheap as EMT has gotten quite expensive these days. 12 pieces of 1" EMT these days is probably $250 and if you don't want to weld it together, the kit to connect them is another $130 or so. So I went the wood route. I'm still working on it but this is what I've accomplished this weekend so far.

The main frame for the screen is 12ft wide and 10ft tall. The screen frame is made with 2x10's because I wanted to eventually fold up some side nets inside. The floor is 12ft wide and 11ft deep made with 2x4's and 7/16" OSB. The floor is hinged and the electric winch to hoist is up is a fairly cheap 220/440lb winch mounted to the wall. I got a full roll of carpet padding for cheap so I decided to run two layers of it to be softer and maybe get it closer to the height of my hitting mat. I had planned on buying the cheapo turf from Lowes but the guy who sold me the carpet pad had a lot of carpet remnants and made me a deal on a piece big enough to do what I needed. Rather than using expensive eye bolts, I bought a pack of fence staples for like $6 and that is holding my screen. Although I ran out of bungees and need to buy/borrow a carpet knee kicker to stretch out the carpet.

    Costs so far:
$200 - All of the wood purchased so far including some side curtains which I haven't built
$60 - Screws, staples, hinges, misc hardware, and bungees
    $85 - Winch
    $100 - Aikeec impact screen 10ft x 10ft (Prime day deal)
    $40 - Carpet remnants
    $30 - Carpet underpad

    Total so far: $515

Here is a video of the winch in action.

I am kind of regretting my decision to use regular carpet instead of cheap astroturf. I think the astroturf would've just laid flat and I could staple it fairly loosely without any real concerns but maybe not. Either way, I decided to rent a carpet power stretcher today. It was only $30 total and it straightened all the wrinkles out of the carpet but it took several hours. I feel like if I had real tack strips like in your home or normal walls to brace against, it'd be easier but using staples and only being able to use a few brace points makes it way harder and I was afraid to put tack strips on the edge where it might get kicked. Either way, the carpet is down. I've debated using RIT dye to make it green-ish but I honestly don't think it matters.

Ended up using a chain link fence privacy mesh for the side walls and ceiling. It's certainly not blackout curtains but I think it blocks out a good amount of light and it should catch stray balls but no way it would take a direct hit. I paid $60 for 8 ft wide x 50 ft long thinking I wanted a full cage but that didn't match reality and my plans changed a little. In hindsight, I should've bought 5 ft or 6 ft wide because I ended up folding it which wasn't ideal. It still works and I have a lot of extra so I may double up or maybe just use it as curtains during the day to block some of the light coming in from the windows.

I may do that at some point but haven't figured out exactly what I'm going to do about it yet. At the moment I'm the only one using it so it's not really high on my list. I have been more focused on getting my Garmin R10 working properly and just figured out that it was the mini split unit messing up short chips so finding a solution besides turning the AC off is my next priority.

Love this set up. Looking to do something very similar. Was considering building the floor with a spot for a True Strike or Fiberbuilt insert that would be flush with floor. Also, likely will put down astroturf to putt on.

How much does the floor weigh? Was wondering about not using the winch and lifting manually with hook/anchor to wall. Maybe employ some pneumatic struts. Anyway you could send me pics of the hinges you used?

Sweet setup. I'm only commenting on your Jeep though. That's pretty badass.

                Carry on.

The floor itself weighs about 350lbs in wood alone. So add in the carpet, hitting mat, and padding and I'm sure it's at least 400lbs. Granted you wouldn't have to lift 400 lbs since it's on hinges but it's super heavy and you and a buddy may throw your back out after wearing your back out playing golf.

Here are the hinges I used. I used 5 on the bottom and 3 on each side so I had to buy one locally. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I absolutely love the creativity here. Well done! Can you provide the name of the wall mounted electric winch you have used. TIA
