  • Carls Place vs Sig 10

    Hi Everyone,

Thank you for the add to the group! This past year I took a job as a college golf coach. Previously I was an assistant PGA professional. I have access to Trackmans to teach my players and students but would like a place at home to practice a bit myself.

My space is 23 feet long, 13 feet wide, and 9.5 high. I will be using a Mevo+.

Carls: 96x148x60 DIY Golf Enclosure Kit with Premium Impact Screen (Remnant/Clearance)

This basic DIY Enclosure Kit includes:
    • Impact screen
    • Fabric enclosure
    • Frame connector fittings
It does not include pipes or any other add-ons.

Im guessing I need pipes at a minimum but what else would be needed to make it similar to what the sig10 comes with?

I’m not super handy. How intense is setting up a Carls enclosure and impact screen? I like the size and price a lot more than the sig 12 but I don’t want to get in over my head.

    Thank you for any suggestions!

Assembling a Carl's Place enclosure is pretty easy. They give you a diagram to follow. You will need 1" EMT (assuming your kit is not the Pro kit). They have videos on their website demonstrating assembly. You may need some help attaching the outside skin and screen (just someone to hold things). I did it myself but had to keep moving my ladder around. Also, make sure the enclosure you buy does not closely match your area width/height. You need to allow at least a foot above the enclosure for assembly and so any that hit the top don't also hit your ceiling. Also need close to 12" behind it. I only have 9" behind mine and I needed to install a really heavy comforter down bottom to absorb low launching shots (4 iron and up). Ball speeds over 130mph (even with proper tension on screen) can still push the screen in enough to hit the wall behind the enclosure.

Alby You didn't ask this but with being a golf coach, I would highly recommend a camera based LM over a radar unit like the Mevo+. Radar is good outdoors because it can see much more or all of the ball flight. They suffer indoors. Radar LMs can measure total spin of the ball (with metal sticker on the ball or RCT balls) but they can't measure spin axis of the ball. It has to use club information to estimate spin axis. This can be accurate if you hit the center of the face, but if you hit towards the heel or toe, the spin axis can be bad, typically underestimated. Plus radar LMs aren't very good at chipping and putting. Camera LMs measure total spin and spin axis of the ball without needing club data and chipping and putting is superior.

Tom and COgolfengineer. Thank you for the responses. I think I could handle the assembly of a carls enclosure.

I had wanted to try the Mevo plus because we have a GC quad in our practice area indoors at school and I was not overly impressed by it. I will also be using it a lot outdoors (8 months per year) and the long term plan is to transition to a trackman. This was my thinking at least. I don’t plan on using it for putting at all. Was going to do a lot of wedge work though. Would the pro package on the Mevo plus improve some of the data indoors?

        Appreciate your expertise!

What was wrong with the quad?

It seems to have a lot of issues capturing some shots. I’m not really fond of the software I think it’s an older version I believe. We play a lot of tournaments at different altitudes so being able to take something to the range is appealing to me.

Hmm?? Every time I watch any PGA Tour event, the range is covered with both GC Quad's and Trackman.

You should check out Bullseye Golf Sims there enclosures are top notch quality. Love mine

Alby The GCQuad is considered the most accurate launch monitor out there, so not sure why you're not impressed by it. The FSX software isn't very good but there's many other software options, such as GSpro. For indoors, Quad it is the best. For outdoors, it'll give you normalized data, so flat range and no wind effects. Trackman will take into account the wind and terrain. This is why you typically see pros having both a TM and Quad, to get both sets of data.

The Mevo+, even with Pro Package, and even TM, will suffer on chip shots, especially the shorter they go. A camera based LM is the way to go. You can even step down from a Quad and do a BLP/GC3. And why not do putting? I would think having a putting green, setting up the LM next to you, you can see how accurate or consistent one's putting stroke is. You'd want to see how consistent they are with speed and also if they're pushing/pulling putts. Radar units are terrible with putting.

As far as sim course play, some people don't care for putting. I actually like it and my speed control on putting outdoors has improved a ton. Reading the break outside is a different story.

Ultimately, if you're a coach and coaching skilled players, you want accurate data. Radar like TM and Mevo+ are great outside, but camera LMs are far superior inside.

After looking at it more it’s a GC3 in our indoor space at school. We have never been able to take it with us to tournaments because of space limitations. We have to fly with bags, pushcarts, luggage etc. The girls really don’t care for the software at all. Long term we are going to switch to trackman at the school with a Puttview green. We have 2 racquet ball courts to work with space wise at school. We had PXG come for a fitting for the team and the Trackman was just a lot better in my opinion with graphics and capturing more shots.

I’ve just never enjoyed putting indoors on simulators myself. Most D1 schools have a separate putting area to practice indoors.

That is interesting. I have used Trackman at Club Champion. It's obviously the industry standard for Radar monitors. I would never "bash it," but from what I remember, it has latency. Which for simulation, it "less desirable." Not sure what software you guys are using with the GC3? If it is running on a computer that meets/exceeds required specs, it has no latency and should have a more realistic feel for simulation. I don't have a "hopped up" PC, but when using my CC Quad, as soon as my ball hits the screen you can see the tracer line on the screen. My ball speeds are decent too. Trackman is big $$, even compared to the GC Quad (which is less big bucks). Anyway, good luck with the team.
