  • Cheap Swing Camera Setup w/ Swing Catalyst (Test Video and Impressions)

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my swing camera setup, and some initial thoughts, since I’ve had a ton of questions along my own journey of swing camera research, and thought this may help anyone considering some of the same options.

General sim setup details are in my earlier Reddit post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Golfsimulat...eb2x&context=3

    Cameras: ELP OV4689 720p/120fps w/ 2.8-12mm CS Lens ($84/each), purchased from AliExpress

For my face-on camera I have a Dioche 2.1mm wide angle lens ($14, Amazon), so I can fit completely in frame can capture entire swing, since tee/ball is close to side wall at 54”.

The DTL camera sits just behind my Mevo+, at about 8 feet from tee/ball.

Both USB cameras are wired with BlueRigger Active USB extension cables (25’ & 32’) each are less than $20 on Amazon

For swing analysis software, I am just about at the end of my 10 day free trial of Swing Catalyst (SC).

I’ll likely consider the BASIC package ($490/year) as the Launch Monitor integration works flawlessly and I can record video lessons when my coach comes over; and you get all the analysis tools.

The one bummer is that it doesn’t seem the Mevo+ can connect to both Swing Catalyst and GSPro simultaneously (if anyone knows a fix to connect to both, let me know!)

Getting the cameras configured in SC did take a few minutes of tinkering. In the advanced camera setting options, you have to force override the media type to set the cameras at 720p/120fps.

The only minor annoyance so far is that if SC is capture ready for over 90 seconds with recording a swing, the cameras will de-sync and fall into clock drift, which really isn’t a big deal, I just toggle the capture ready button and take a swing within that first 90 seconds. Other than that, no issues with SC after I got it running, and no dropped frames at all.

The big downside to these cheap ELP cameras, even at 120fps, is really bad club blur. Actually, my club is invisible at impact and any other freeze frame on the downswing (camera has rolling shutter, not global)

I’m finding these cheap cameras acceptable for now, as they are still helpful for most of my swing faults at the moment.

Otherwise, if I wanted to upgrade, I’ve been eyeing the FLIR Blackfly GigE POE BFS-PGE-04S2C-CS: 0.4 MP, 291 FPS, Sony IMX287, Color ($361 direct from FLIR) w/ Computar A4Z2812CS-MPIR CS-Mount 2.8-10mm Manual Varifocal Lens from B&H Photo ($99) which is 42% cheaper than buying from Swing Catalyst for $795 each! (and sold out anyway).

    But I don’t think I’m ready for a $920 upgrade quite yet...
