  • ELP outdoor camera performance vs indoor

    Hi all,

I am using my sim setup exclusively outdoors, and wish to use high speed cameras with Kinovea. Most of my research about camera recommendations (OV4689) is based on results INSIDE and not outside. I'm not sure what LUX level is on a typical UK cloudy day, but what I don't have is any feedback on the most common cameras used in these conditions, and the impact on rolling shutter/blurryness. Are these cheaper ELP cameras any better at 120fps outdoors, anyone with video that can show me? The sharp, undistorted image of the shaft is most important to me. Is a rolling shutter OK if used outdoors, or should global shutter still be considered (OV9281)?

They will likely perform better outdoors because you have a lot more light available than indoors, even on a cloudy day. If you still need more light, can get a spotlight on a tripod or something. But you'll still need a global shutter. A rolling shutter will still distort the shaft and make it look like you're bending it like crazy. More expensive cameras with a rolling shutter can correct this but i doubt these cheaper options do.

Thank you I think then the OV9281 120fps B&W camera it is then - I don't know if there are any similar alternatives?

That's a pretty common sensor for the usb2.0 cameras.
