  • A novel way to raise a basement ceiling

I did a whole lot of searching before doing this and found very little on the topic, so hired a structural engineer to design a plan. My floor joists were 9' off the floor prior to this work and we gained about 7.5"

For those facing my situation, I thought posting this might help. The plan called for bolting 4" steel C channel to the top of the joists and cutting the joists short. I've noticed no bounce or change to the floor above.

This is an almost done photo, with 4 joists left to cut. The room is 14' wide (but looks narrow in the photo).

7.5" in ceiling height makes all the difference in the world! Kudos to you! Well done!

Yep I agree. I can even swing the Superspeed training clubs down there now with no risk of hitting the ceiling. We had been hitting into a net at 9' for a while and only hit a few times, but this takes that issue out of your head.

It helps to have a retired iron worker and a sheet metal worker as friends. Also, those oscillating saws work great for cutting the joists clean.

Still very much a work in process, but this is where adding the structural steel got me with ceiling height. Basically the white drywall is where the room was raised from the original false ceiling. It helps to have a friend who does sheet metal for a living to relocate all the duct work. We finished with very little soffit space.

It's funny, the room looks narrower in the picture than in real life. It's 13' 2" wide.

Hi Gobble thanks for posting this, is this in your basement? To understand better your floor to ceiling joist was originally 7.5 and you modified it to 9.3? Currently, mine is like 8.4 when i am hitting off a mat and I cannot hit any woods.

Looks great!! I have 9'3" and wouldn't want much less than that!

That looks great! Can you explain in laymen’s terms what was actually done to gain the extra height?

Bolt 4" steel C channel to the top of the 2 x 12 floor joists and cut the joists short to match the bottom of the C channel. Block the sides.

Great looking room sir. 9'3" is enough for most people. Well done.

                    Thanks.

I haven't measured since I finished, but I think the turf and drywall have me at about 9'5". So far nobody has come all that close to the ceiling and I've had some pretty tall people over.

How much did the engineer's design cost approximately?
