Projector Dual Aspect Ratio

Hi, I'm building a golf simulator in my house but I need some advice please.

My impact screen will go on a wall which has a usable space of 3m wide by 3m high. When playing golf, I want to fill that space as best possible so either a 3x3m screen (1:1 ratio) or a 3x2.3m screen (4:3 ratio). I would also like to watch movies and TV shows in 4K on the same screen but changing to 16:9 ratio i.e. filling out 3m wide but with 1.7m high, with the image in the middle of the screen.

Is this possible to do with certain short throw projectors and if so, is there a feature name I need to look out for?

I spoke with BenQ and they said it's not possible with their products.

Don't think this is possible. I'm in a similar situation with a 16:10 screen. You have to adjust the projector and graphics card settings on computer to fill the screen for golf. When you go to movies it will over shoot the screen.

The "throw" of a projector (distance from lens to screen, divided by image width) is related to the aspect ratio. So if you change the aspect ratio, you need to change the distance between projector and the screen unless there is a zoom lens that can accommodate this. There are a few people who have built projectors on mounts so the projector can slide back and forth to get the distance needed to change aspect ratios and get the right throw. Projector Central has a distance calculator, so if you input a projector throw ratio and screen width and then vary the aspect ratios, it will provide the distances required from lens to screen for each aspect ratio.

Yes I do this on my 158” wide by 108” high screen.

BenQ 936 projector has a .75x digital zoom function with memory presets. Key is to use both HDMI inputs of the projector.

PC to HDMI 1 with golf software running a custom nVidia resolution to fill the screen.

Streaming device to HDMI 2 and 0.75x memory preset.

If you get your throw distance correct you can fill the entire screen with your golf software and fill the entire width of the screen with your 4k content.
