How far away to be shank-proof?

Hi all,

I am building my simulator which is 15' wide with the tee in the center. I am set up 10.5 feet from the screen and have my computer setup on the wall to the right. (I'll attach a picture)

The computer area is a couple of feet in front of the hitting area and someone mentioned that someone could shank into it with a bad shot. I thought I was in the safe zone, but please share any opinions or experiences. The dog pillow in the picture is covering up the hitting area. (actually you can see the small, white dot. That will be the center of the hitting area. Thanks!

I’ve witnessed a shank from someone that would hit about where your level is against the wall. Better to be safe than sorry.

The only safe place is behind the hitting area. Aside from shanks you also have to consider off the end of the clubhead shots. Believe me players of all handicaps from +5 to -36 hit one sideways every now and then especially when on full tilt kill.

My space is still under construction but we have probably hit several thousand balls. I have some marks on my side walls but not as far back as where your computer is. But it does look like it's too far towards the screen. I'm planning a tv monitor on that wall and wouldn't mount it that far forward.

It's nice to see what other people are doing because it helps me plan. Can I ask a few questions?

Are your wall pads DIY? Is that a vinyl covering? Why not use a covering that absorbs sound?
Your front row of recessed lights looks like it could get hit by a ball?
I will also have some area on top of my screen that I was planning to mask. I never thought about raising the screen and padding the bottom. Shouldn't the screen go to the floor?

Yes, these are DIY padding that I am doing. I am using 3" and on the ceiling 2" memory foam wrapped in marine vinyl. Not sure what you mean by sound absorbing, but I do have acoustic paneling going up beside the padding as well. I could share a picture.As far as hitting those recessed lights, I flopped a 58˚ wedge wide open and couldn't get near the lighting. Worse case scenario, if someone hits one, I will just pull them back closer. They are just plastic LED ceiling lights. There is steel EMT pipe that I used to build the frame of the screen. The padding covers all of that. Sure, I could make the padding smaller on the bottom, but not sure why I would need to. My screen is almost exactly a 16:9 ratio which is what I was going for.

For my DIY wall tiles, I was considering the same thing but instead of the marine vinyl using something like a burlap that sound could enter and get lost in the foam behind the covering. I built a theater room years back and the walls had acoustic absorbing material behind acoustically transparent fabric. I haven't been to the fabric store yet to see what is available.

I think I found a good resolution as I really want to keep the computer there (that window is screwing me up). I found a piece of plexiglass and zip-tied in front of the computer. The monitor I am less worried about. I would still be surprised as hell if someone actually hit near the computer, but who knows.

If you invite enough people with varying skills, someone will toe shank one eventually. I have ball marks in places you couldn't imagine. Backwards hosel shanks are in play as well. Swinging indoors can really mess with swings.
