  • Folding Floor Questions / Help Me Upgrade My Garage Sim

I'm planning to upgrade my current DIY garage simulator from the version 1.0. Currently I have to lift and roll out the turf and hitting mat, but am wanting a more automated solution via a folding floor.

I have an 8' tall screen and 19' of depth in front of the screen to work with. Garage door tracks are being lifted next week, so height and exact hitting location is no longer an issue.

My current hitting area is centered at 8' from the screen with the Garmin R10 sitting 9' behind that. What I'm thinking is two 6' floor sections with a skinnier 6' separate addition for the R10. This would let me push the future hitting area to 9-10' from the screen without feeling like I'm close to either end of the second floor piece.
For the floors I'm thinking 2x4s on their sides (to save a couple inches of space when folded up) with a 1/2" plywood, then EVA foam tiles, and cheapo fake fescue from Home Depot (not doing any putting, and that's what I currently have), over top.

First question - I often see the recommendation for 1" EVA tiles. I have 1/2" tiles in my basement gym right on concrete and find these fine for that purpose. Does the extra 1/2" make a big difference for the sim floor? I just tried standing on two 1/2" tiles on top of eachother and thought it was a bit too squishy, so maybe 3/4" if needed?

Second and bigger question - what would be the best / most efficient way to build the winch mechanism into my current frame? Currently I have a 1" EMT frame anchored to the back wall (pictures hopefully attached) and resting on the floor with about a foot of space behind the screen. I'm using curtains as shank shields and a net over top for the flop shots.

I'm thinking 2x corner pulleys anchored above the screen with the cable running through a pvc conduit (picture as the old hockey stick) the length of the net and curtain (when folded in), and attached to the far end of the first piece of floor. That first piece of floor would hinge off of another 2x4 that I THINK I can attach to the lower EMT pipe with a bunch of brackets and still be able to add/remove the screen bungies, but would be hesitant to do the same for the winch. I haven't picked/purchased one yet, but feel like something with 1000lb should be more than adequate for that floor. I know next to nothing about winches, so want to make sure I'm mounting it safely and so that it wont bend the frame. Would a strip of 3/4" plywood that is screwed into the wall studs PLUS bolting the winch to the studs be sufficient (similar to the frame mounting)? Or should I look at bolting it to the concrete floor or foundation?

    Thanks in advance!

A Great soltuion for the flooring would be to go with your eva tiles, topped off with lowes carpet padding with the moisture barrier facing upwards. lowes.com/pd/Leggett-Platt-11-11-mm-Rebond-Carpet-Padding/1000683295
You can top that off with camry carpet(This stuff is extremely popular to add the putting aspect, and the combo with the padding + Camry putting carpet eliminates bounce back and sound! Its also a fraction of the cost of any artificial turf solution + you get to putt and chip all year round on a 11.5 speed and true roll. We got the carpet from camrygolfgreens online store.

Heres a photo of our recent project(we saved thousands on the flooring) -

Is having moisture barrier on the carpet padding a requirement or could padding without the barrier be used?
