  • My New Custom Garage Simulator Build/Journal - Tons of pics, start to finish!

Hi all, welcome to my simulator build. My garage was getting too cluttered and was turning into a catch all for everything. I keep my weekend cars in here, but it’s too big of a space to just clutter up and not use. Perfect time to gut it and turn it into a simulator.

I am still waiting on 1 piece as it is on back-order until November. That’s the BenQ TK710sti 4k projector. As for the other pieces, I am using the ProTee VX LM, I custom built the PC using an i7 processor and 4080 Super graphics card. Using TFD Elite Putting Turf (15’x25’). I made the hitting mat custom and bought the screen through a supplier that doesn’t advertise. Onto the pics!!

Here is how my garage looked when I started. Actually, this is after a day of cleaning it out. What a mess.

Okay, now we are getting somewhere. Starting to look like a clean garage.

Let’s knock out those rear built-in cabinets.

Started to paint the walls and garage doors.

Let’s wrap up some padding with Navy blue Marine Vinyl.

Covering up my old peg board and blacking out the window.

    More pieces coming.

Lift is sold so let’s build a wall.

This is the location where the screen will go.

Building the frame for the screen using steel EMT, clamps, and tarp clips.

    More padding pictures.

    Let’s start that flooring.

    FINALLY! I have some help.

That was a short shift Mr. Ralph.

    Turf going down…

    Computer built and installed.

Installed some shiplap on my wall to pretty it up.

Painted the wall and hung up my corn hole boards that I recently built.

Had to level the floor where the old drain was.

    Making progress…

Trying to figure out placement for bar and stools.

Rack for some extra clubs and most of my wedges I like to experiment with.

If anyone is looking to put some golf club racks in, I highly recommend these. They are for fishing pools, but work great. $10 on Amazon for a set which holds 6 clubs. I bought 5 sets, but am going to buy 3 more.

Hope you’ve enjoyed the pics and progress!

Thanks for posting these pics. Quite the transformation!

One of the things I'm struggling with in my own design is wiring. It looks like you've got a nice clean look, with the wiring behind the drywall. A couple of questions:

I assume you ran power to the ceiling near the projector mount? Did you run an HDMI cord from the projector to the computer? Any other cords either into or out of the computer, besides the monitor?

Do you have a soundbar or speakers? Wired or Bluetooth?

If you were going to change anything, like adding a second monitor/TV, is there anything you did or would do differently to allow for further expansion/integration of various components?

What am I not asking about (what have I missed?)

      Thanks and well done!

I'm tied up at the moment, but will answer all of your questions when I can.

Hey there, thanks. I actually have no drywall, but there were plenty of outlets throughout the garage and on the ceiling because it used to have fluorescent lights. So, my ceiling is kind of a double-edged sword. It is celotex which is foil veneered foam board. The bad thing about that is, it doesn't look as good as drywall or a tongue and groove ceiling, but the great news is, I can just cut holes in it and run wiring anywhere above it and then just foil tape it closed again. I have not added a soundbar and speakers yet, but will. TV's will be used with a fire stick. I hope this helps.

I decided to redesign the bottom of the screen so I didn't need padding and the floor and screen blend together. Much better.

Mr Wolfe, If you have them… I’d really like to see more pics of how you built and mounted your screen. Your build is very close to what I am beginning - before I do I am trying to research how to build the frame for the enclose portion and especially the screen mounting. Thanks. And great looking build.

If you look above in the first set of pictures, it shows the steel EMT pipe that I used and how they are attached. I then used tarp clips with bungees to grab onto the screen because I don't have grommets built into the screen. Originally, I had steel EMT going across the bottom as well, but ultimately did not like it. I removed the bottom pipe. I then used all of the clips to REALLY secure the top about every 18" and then pulled it tight side to side with a bunch more of the bungee clips. After that, I took some thin aluminum bars and screwed that into the 2x4 (through the screen) that is going across the bottom of the floor. I hope this makes sense!

Great job putting this together. Really looks professional. I am in the middle of flipping my set up 180 degrees to allow to mount the newly coming overhead sim I just bought on sale from Uneekor Eye XO. Had to get a short throw projector to replace old long throw one and so far measurements allow mounting right beside outlet. My son also built me a dedicated computer where I will have 2 screens and TV above that. Will take pictures along the way and post once done.

Sounds awesome! I just added a 65" TV and doing the final touches. I will post pics later in the week.

Ok, for now, I am finished with the golf simulator. I love how it all turned out. One of the most rewarding projects I have ever done.

Looks fantastic! You got me rethinking how i have the bottom of my screen set up. I currently have the screen attached to EMT conduit with some foam-wrapped putting turf taped down in front to prevent ricochets off the EMT. Those aluminum bars you used are interesting, but I'm a little worried about it possibly tearing there over time from bladed/thinned shots. I might do what you did and remove the bottom EMT, screw the screen down, but also move my foam/turf combo to behind the screen to help absorb the bladed shots.
