Hi. I am currently desiging a basement golf sim. I will have 8'5 height clearance and i'm 6' tall. I have been testing with a makeshift sim and I don't hit the ceiling 99% of the time, but i have hit it a few times depending on my follow through. I'm thinking about tearing up some of the floor to get more height. I was considering a 10x10 dropped area that will give me another 8" of height. There's plenty of clearance for my swing from the front and back of the raised areas, but i'm worried about worm burning shots hitting the front lip of the recessed area. Can i add a deflection wedge / foam / ramp to the end? Or should i extend the excavation another 6.5' to the screen? I can't go full width due to exterior basement wall footings - needs to be in a couple of feet. I want to minimize excavation due to the work in hauling all that dirt by hand. I'd also like the screen to span the whole width of the room (16') but that will leave a recessed area below if i go all the way to the screen. Thoughts?
excavating for additional ceiling height

I'd just excavate all the way to the screen. Leaving any edges in front of your hitting area is just asking for trouble unless your goal is to practice becoming an NHL goalie.
As to the depth any height you can hit with a bad swing will impede your enjoyment knowing you may hit the ceiling.. I have a ten foot high cage and several people with good swings have clanged a clubhead into the overhead pipe with the one in a thousand unusual follow through. .
