Ball to Mevo hitting- 5’-9’
Ball to Mevo putting – 3’-4’
Overall setup: Mevo is within ½” of level with all surfaces. Center offset is 18” adjusted to screen as well. Ball placement for irons and driver is anywhere on the 1x3 insert and the 1’ in front of insert which is awesome to have the freedom. Ball placement for putting is anywhere on the putting surface 3-4’ from Mevo. I play full rounds and always putt out with no gimmes. I also don’t use the aiming or straight line putting features, I much prefer to putt the breaks like normal. I’ve read a lot of complaints on the putting and here’s my take. I’ve spent hours trying to dial in the stimp speeds on the software to match the stimp on my putting surface and I have it reasonably close. Occasionally I’ll get an unrealistic putt result and I simply replay the shot. (every course I set the greens to soft and slow and fairways to firm) Putt range is usable from 1” to 100’. Mevo needs at least 4’ of ball read, so putts that are a few inches or so you need to still putt out 4+ feet for it to read. My no-reads on putts are about 1-30. Bottom line for me is distances have a learning curve but putting the break is excellent, making the experience far more enjoyable then on-green gimmies. The putting doesn’t help my outdoor rounds for distance control but has unexpectedly shaved 3-4 strokes by improving face at impact. If your face impact isn’t perfectly square the putts go offline as normal.
Driving range is great to work on your game and loosen up before rounds. The negative is the carry distance is close to accurate but the roll out is crazy long, So I only pay attention to carry when using the range. TGC2019 claims a few hundred thousand courses, which might be true but what I’ve found is about a few hundred that are realistic. I cannot stand playing a course that looks like a video game, so I have about 40 courses saved that are awesome. Attached is a pic of the same course on TV against the sim to show what I consider realistic. Course carry distances are within a few yards of my actual. I’m a 10 handicap, so a few yards makes no difference to me. Miss and no reads are about 1-50. I play low end taylormade distance+ balls with NO stickers and can chip as close as 3 yards with rare no-reads. I spent a few hours hitting PW/7iron/driver with and without stickers comparing only shots with the same speed, launch, spin and smash, and they’re off by 1-2yards max. So, no sticker hassle for me. One caveat is My driver speed is 88-95 (slow) Perhaps the stickers would be needed with normal swing speeds of 100-120??? I don’t have the pro upgrade because the speed/launch/swing path/spin/smash are all the numbers I need. I always plug in the mevo while playing and have the power save mode off otherwise it turns off in 2hrs
A couple notes worth pointing out: The hitting mat. I spent the first 18 months without the fiberbuilt insert and was experiencing solid left shoulder and wrist pain. The insert was expensive for the size but worth every penny, Zero pain since the install….
I made a razor cut through the puzzle mat 1” Infront of the Mevo and slid in a piece of plexiglass. Total Mevo protection that looks clean
Mevo+ gets five stars from me
TGC2019 gets 4.5 stars with four complaints:
1st, most of the time when you hit OB, you can only drop where it is or go back to the tee box. Lame, you should be able to start from point of entry and go back as far as you’d like.
2nd , TGC doesn’t allow you to pick any hole to play and work on specific shots, you have to start a round and concede each hole, Lame.
3rd, The driving range doesn’t let you create specific distance targets, Lame but not that big of deal.
4th , when loading TGC, if you don’t click start within 90 secs it erases your saved avatar.
As with any sim you have to manage your expectations, and mine are fairly high. I had no budget constraints and I’m shocked I was able to create this level of quality for under $10k including buildout.
Cheers!
