  • Bought an Epic driver for my 50th birthday.

I went to Golftown to get fitted for the epic driver. This was the second time hitting it..... The usual GC2 bay at golftown was not operational. So I went to the only bay that was working.... in the past, it simply did not offer accurate results. I brought my driver to compare. I was spraying the epic all over the place sometimes 40 yards off center. So I tried my driver.... I couldn't hit that straight either. Even balls that were an inch or so off center eventually ended up 30 yards off center. Frustrated, I left and went to the other Golftown. My first few shots with my driver were decent. BS 150-165 and no more than 10 yards off center. While I was waiting for the Epic, I was happy to see that I could draw and fade my driver like in the basement. The Epic's numbers were a little different than mine. LA was 2.5 degrees higher on average. BS was 4 mph faster. Spin was about 300 rpm lower on average. I think that the club being and inch longer may have something to do with the speed. I took about 50 shots with the Epic and near the end I had the same control as with my old driver. The Epic is now in the bag....... 10.5 head with stiff shaft. I also tried the Sub Zero with a extra stiff shaft..... all shots were fades....nothing to the right. Put a stiff shaft in there and found they all still went left. I couldn't draw that driver to save my life.

I also tried the Cobra F7 and the M1. The Callaway felt more comfortable and more like my old driver.

The wife didn't know what to get me for my birthday..... so I took matters into my own hands.

Congrats on the birthday gift! Those Epic drivers are nice. For the record, we don't need you picking up anymore distance.

Haha exactly my thoughts! Awesome stuff though, I feel like I'm on the waiting list for that. I always end up waiting a couple of years to get the driver I might want when it's gets down to only a couple of hundred bucks. Spend all this money for a simulator and it still feels weird to me buying a brand new driver, go figure. This would be the one I'd do it for though if I broke that trend. I'll have to test it out at some point.

Never got fitted for a driver either, think it really makes that big of a difference? I know all the instructors and pros out there recommend it, but if my old sldr driver I recently got used is giving me mid 160 ball speeds and 1800-2200 spin, is it even worth trying to get fitted?

Guess I'm just curious as to how much gains (mostly ball speed wise) people really do get out of a new driver switch when the spin numbers are already about as good as can be hoped for with a old driver they have. Very interesting to me hearing you got 4 extra mph. Other out there have similar results too?

Look forward to hearing your month or 2 review of it as well. Happy birthday!

        Thanks,

I really like the epic...... I will not be selling my old driver just yet. Last year I tried the F6+ and couldn't get used to the shaft....so I sold it for what I paid for it... Getting fitted helps make sure that you get the right shaft for you. We will see how the Epic performs outdoors. 4 mph will give you about 5-10 yards depending on LA and what the fairway is like. I was getting low 2100-2700 with my old driver. The Epic averages just over 300 rpm less..... I think my lowest was about 1790. I had some sub 2000 rpm shots with 13-14 degrees LA .... which is rare for me to have both. I also have quite a few adjustments for loft and shot shaping with the Epic. I have been trying to average about 160 mph with my driver as it is a little easier on the old body. I can still keep the big drive in the bag for special occasions. I can surely recommend the Epic as I find it as easy to hit as my old driver will a little better performance.

I just recently got an epic. Has yet to beat my sldr. I have a duplicate shaft of the one I use and put a callaway adapter on it. But swingweight is too low at 44". I just got an extra weight from callaway so I can bring it back up, so another test will be coming up. So far epic launches higher, spins more for me and goes more left, none of which I need.

Regular Epic or Sub Zero Epic? I like mine.

Stopped by a outdoor range at lunch today........ the verdict..... I am crushing the new driver. Higher LA which is welcomed. I am not sure....but I think that I can draw and fade the ball a little easier with the Epic. I do find it a little more challenging to hit straight than my Cobro Amp. When I set up for a draw..... the ball draws almost 50% more than my old driver. Hitting fades was similar to my old driver. Overall I am pretty excited to try it out on the course.
