  • Do you want to try the '100 Putt Indoor Challenge'??

Golf mates - need to work on your putting??

I sure did: I was averaging 6 three putts per round and it was killing my game. Small putts less than 6 feet were my nemesis - I tensed up and often got the yips.

So given the extra free time many of us have on our hands right now (thank you #coronavirus), I was up for a challenge to improve my putting and lower my handicap (currently 19).

So at the beginning of the month I created 'The 100 Putt Indoor Challenge' - and so far its helping a lot.

So perhaps you want to give it a go?? If keen, see whether you can beat my high score to date - detailed below.

    The game is VERY simple:
    1. Ideally play off a putting mat (I got this one for about $50 - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Milliard-Premium-Golf-Putting-Green-Incline-Mat-for-Indoor-Outdoor-Home-Office-/283526656878) - but any flat surface / thin carpet at home will be okay if you can't get a putting mat.
    2. Measure 1 meter (3 feet, 3.37 inches) from the hole, and 2 meters (6 feet, 6.74 inches) from the hole, and make a small mark at these 2 points on the mat.
    3. Get 10 golf balls, and putt 5 rounds (50 balls total) from the 1 meter marker. Record how many putts you make (eg. 43/50). Then repeat the same (5 rounds, 50 balls total) from the 2 meter marker and record.
    4. Finally total up your score out of 100. Write it down, and play daily to see what improvement you can make after 30 days (of lockdown!).
(NB: as my mat has 3 holes, I putt 3 balls to each hole, and then 1 final ball back to the centre so I can get in the flow and not have to continually clear the holes to complete each round of 10). Either that, or train your dog :-)

How do the pros do with putts of this length? From what I can research:

    Given a 1m putt, pros sink ~94% (or 47/50)
    Given a 2m putt, pros sink ~62% (or 31/50) ...

... Under tournament pressure and of course mostly on undulating surfaces - but interesting to compare & benchmark nonetheless.

So I set myself a target: sink a minimum of 98% of my 1m putts, and 80% of my 2m putts, for a minimum of 3 days running.

How am I doing so far?

For context, on day 1 of the challenge my results were:

    1m: 47/50 (94%)
    2m: 31/50 (62%)

On Day 16 I set my new record: 5 misses total out of 100 (Including 61 putts in a row!), broken down by:

    1m: 50/50 (100%)
    2m: 45/50 (90%)

That said, I have yet to achieve my target above (minimum of 98% of 1m putts, and 80% of 2m putts, for 3 days running) so I still have work to do!

    Your turn!

Give it a go if this sounds of interest to you. Post your results up here so we can all see your progress. See how many days it takes you to achieve a minimum of 98% of 1m putts, and 80% of 2m putts, for 3 days running.

My ultimate aim now is to see if I can achieve 100/100 putts within the 30 day challenge period... but doubt my nerves can handle sinking that final 100th putt?!?

Stay safe & have fun. Cheers.

Based on some favorable reviews of the exputt, i placed an order for one. Once it comes in, i will try this out.

        Quick update (Day 25):

I set a new record today - sunk 96 out of 100 attempts, broken down by:

        1m: 50/50 (100%)
        2m: 46/50 (92%)

Still determined to hit 100/100. We'll see! This challenge is definitely helping.

This is a great idea for putting indoors while we are all stuck at home. I have the puttout mat and training aid and love it and will start doing this exact routine every day. Thanks for the idea!!!

            Day 28 News Flash...

            I finally did it today!

            1 meter (3.28 feet): 50/50 (100%)
            2 meters (6.56 feet): 50/50 (100%)

100 sunk from 100 putts - yeah baby! I took 28 days of trying (one 20min session per day), taking notes along the way regarding what's working/what not to do, to slowly improve from 78/100 (day 1) to 100/100 (day 28).

Really learnt the value of a solid and consistent set up, and perhaps most importantly (for me anyway), the huge importance to putt success of the takeaway/back-swing (eg. keeping putter head on plane, and at even tempo). If anyone's interested I'm happy to share my 'putt mastery' (lol) cheat notes - just message me.

SO, I've laid down the marker. Look forward to seeing who's first to beat it.

Very cool. My new sim room will have a few real holes to putt and chip at …..16ft wide, I was thinking....in the middle and 10 feet off center for the other two. Can you putt with R Motion?
I wish that TGC 2019 showed 1 or 2 decimals when putting. My system really does well on speed and HA.

Your new sim room sounds nice. Yup, you can definitely putt with the R-motion, although can't say I use it much for that

The room is going to be 16.5 x 30 x 10..... looking forward to it.....moving in May 20. My system is pretty tight for putting....it can detect the speed difference when a ball travels 4 inches farther than the previous shot. Most people think that putting sucks on sims.... which is really not the case.
            Working...
