  • After 19 years of playing golf, I finally understand shallowing the club

I started playing golf in 2001 after college. I made the mistake of not taking lessons to start. After 10 years I shot in the high 90s. I took a series of six 30-minute lessons in 2010 but it didn't help my scores or my swing. I always have an over the top swing with flipping issues. I tried and tried to maintain lag but it was impossible with my over the top swing. I quit golf for 5 years.

Finally I started to play golf again this year and I also scored in the high 90s. Two months ago I took a series of 8 30-minute lessons. Slowly the instructor fixed my backswing but most importantly he taught me that on the downswing I need to shallow the club, tuck the right elbow to the body and turn from there.

The result is that my drives are straighter and longer. I used to have a fade or slice with a total of 220 to 240 yards. Now I am driving the balls 250 to 260 yards. My iron shots are also straighter and about 10 yards longer. Swings with the irons feels so effortless compared to before. I am not totally grooved with the new swing yet, on the course sometimes my old swing creeps back. Last week I shot 84 on a PAR 70 course. I need a lot more practice with shallowing the club to teach my body. I am really excited.

If you have an over the top swing or if you tend to slice, look into "shallowing the club" videos on youtube.

    CONGRATULATIONS

I too have been playing a long time until recently never understood "shallowing the club". After hours of videos I finally found it and I was hitting ball then turf and pinching the ball. I still am on and off with it but hope to groove it into my swing. There is no better feeling in golf than pure striking the ball. My biggest problem still is head movement. If I keep my head centered I strike it any movement bad strike.
