  • Swing cameras with Protee VX

Is anyone using swing cameras with their VX? I am looking to get 2 cameras and software. Is there any that integrate with the VX? If not what recommendations do you have?

I am looking at Kinovea because it is free, but willing to purchase a software if it is easier to setup and use.

I tried Swing Catalyst but at 200 a year its too expensive for me. It is super easy though. Between Kinovea and OBS, I found OBS far easier to set up.

A bit of fiddling to set up Kinovea but there are good guides. Works well when done. You need a microphone also but works with cheap one.

Once setup you get your swing to automatically play in slow motion after every swing. You can save your setup so you only have to do it once.

Any recommendations for cameras? I was looking at the Carl’s place cameras.

This has the same fps as Carls cameras but have no idea if the Carls are actually better.

I decided that I wanted to keep the cameras running on a different platform instead of integrating with the launch monitor.

            Here’s my alternative:
LIVEVIEW Pro 2 camera on a tripod. I use that camera face-on. I have another tripod with a phone holder (it’s their tripod so it’s exactly the same tripod, but instead of using their camera it has a clamp style holder for a phone. With LIVEVIEW pro 2, it will use the phone as the second camera. The LIVEVIEW app runs on my iPad and I mirror to the 3rd TV (or I leave it on the iPad if I am already running something on the 3rd screen).

Advantages of using LIVEVIEW Pro 2:
            1. It automatically listens for the strike and records the swing as an individual file.
            2. It can automatically place the lines on the golfer (shoulders, legs, hips, arms, etc). If you want to enable that feature…or
            3. It allows you to draw your own lines and then use the screen as a mirror. So, let’s say I want to make sure my club is on plane, I can draw the lines and looking straight ahead at the TV, I can rehearse a swing in slow motion and see that I am staying on the line. Then, when I hit a shot, it auto records (with my lines already there). This had an unintended benefit, which I really like. That is when I draw the line (think shaft plane at address), when I go to hit the next shot, I can make sure the shaft is exactly lined up. That means that from video to video there’s no change to my position or camera angle because those lines show me that I am in the exact same spot.
            4. If during the summer, I want to take the camera to an outdoor range, I can grab the tripod and the LIVEVIEW Pro and throw it in my golf bag.
            5. Sometimes, I use cameras without even turning on the simulator. This is something I do when I am not going to spend a lot of time hitting shots, but there’s a “feel” I want to try and see what it looks like on camera.
            6. If you are already running a lot of things on your computer, putting the cameras on a separate system reduces risk of overrunning your PC. I just upgraded my PC, but I saw that when I am running 4k projection, 4k graphics with ultra settings (on both the golf sim software - GS PRO and on the range software LABS), and running a 3rd screen (TV, YouTube, golf videos, etc)…adding high def cameras to that mix seems like at some point, I could cause performance problems. By splitting cameras off the system, I can guarantee that my computer performance will be what I need).

            Disadvantages:
            1. I don’t have the shot information with the swing. For me, that’s not a big deal because when I hit a shot, it saves the video. I simply name the video something to identify it.
            2. the cameras aren’t just automatically turned on when I start the system. Currently, since I am transitioning from indoor golf to getting on the course, I usually have my computer turned off. So, when I walk in, I put the iPad on the stand, I turn on the cameras. When the computer boots up, projector starts up. I launch the golf sim software and the lab software…and while those are loading, I also launch the camera software and turn on cameras. These things are all happening simultaneously so it doesn’t really add time to setup.
            3. The LIVEVIEW Pro 2 only has one of their cameras. The second camera is from the phone. Depending on your phone, that camera might not be as good.
            4. Video quality can be better using the higher end dedicated cameras.

I know this isn’t exactly what you were asking for, but a couple months ago, I was going through all the options for setting up the cameras just like you are doing now. Ultimately, when I weighed my options, I think the ability to use the camera in my sim or on the range was probably the key factor. Further, there are features with LIVEVIEW pro that you simply don’t get with any of the other camera setups. The AI is useful.

I will warn you, however, I bought their original camera several years ago. It worked well, but the video quality was not good. It was good enough because of the capabilities, but it was not close to good enough to use for a sim where I want better quality. The LIVEVIEW Pro 2 is 120fps HD video, but it’s still not as good for the video quality as a high end camera. I haven’t used it enough yet to see if there are things I can do (lighting) to make the video quality better…

Good luck with your decision. I look forward to seeing what you decide to do.

Would love to have side and rear cameras mounted that works seamlessly with my ProTee VX.

Any update?? Trying to decide on which cameras to buy, and I would really want to go with something that will integrate with my VX seamlessly.

Using kayeton cameras and they work well with the vx.

Why not the kayetons which are 120 fps?

Have you verified that you are getting 120fps ? It seems almost all USB cameras I tried I won't get more then 30fps, even though the camera supports up to 260fps (at lower res) :-)

Nope. Need to check. How do you check? I just use the slow motion replays.

I love the Keyton cameras. Great choice for the price.
