  • Swing camera for protee labs beta (1.8.5.1)

I have tried a number of different USB cameras but always seem to get a somewhat blurry club in the videos. All cameras I have used are 90fps or faster (depending on resolution)

I don't see a difference between 60fps, 90fps or 120 fps at 1080p (different cameras). Event tried low res at 260fps, still club looks blurry.

Is there a way to verify if I am actually getting 120fps using the swing video, or is it fixed at a certain frame rate.

    Latest camera I am using

    https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0D8JBLT5Y?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

which is really nice given the wide angle and the fact it has a 1/4 in tripod adapter. I don't have to be more than 4ft behind or to side and still get full swing in the frame.

    Though at 1080p with 120fps I would expect a clearer swing/club video.

    Any ideas ?

i believe you should start with a global shutter camera and ensure good lighting to allow for quick exposure which i think is more relevant for blur elimination than fps (although the two are related). interested to hear protee's answer to these questions as there has been little guidance on this new feature afaik..

Yeah the IMX577 Sensor is rolling shutter annd you definitely need global shutter for high speed captures. Also, most if not all of these cases users are not using enough light. It needs to be really bright to capture clear images. These cheap Amazon and Ali express cameras tend to automatically increase the exposure when there is not enough light to boost the brightness of the image.

Curious if anyone has considered the carls camera, 2.5mm wide angle with a aperture of 1.2 f which supposedly aids in lower light conditions

Has anyone managed to get a GoPro 11 (or newer) to work with their protee VX as a swing camera ?

Just found out that when using gropro as a webcam it only supports 30fps :-(

There is a guy on the high end facebook golf sim forum that compared a bunch of cameras. From what I recall there was no magic bullet. I don't understand why you can get great video from an iphone even in a lower light situation but none of these USB cameras seem to be any good. I had looked into the Carls camera a while back, I don't remember my exact conclusions, but recall it's a rebranded something else that isn't amazing for the money. Even golftech, and I was there just a few days ago, doesn't have great HD quality video even with the bright light they turn on before you swing. I'd be surprised if someone finds a great low-cost solution but would love to hear if its out there.

Just found out that Carls is not a global shutter camera so that may influence a decision

I am overloaded with camera options and now I am thinking.....what happens if PT decides to recommend a certain spec (like the VX CPU) and AI becomes a factor in doing the video analysis? I wish PT would establish some suggestions on specs that may help with making a good investment versus a throw away. I can see the VX becoming a beast if they incorporate AI swing analysis.......they are definitely in the cat birds seat. Great company!

I ordered 2 of these, as they seemed the best solution that was global shutter, higher frame rate (120fps @ 1280x720), and low cost (below $100). I regret I didn't get the version with the zoom lens, as the one I chose is a fixed lens for 6-8 feet distance. It turns out I'm a bit farther away, so some zoom would be better.

They work great with the VX, though the club face is a bit blurry. I don't have good lighting at all, which is obviously an issue and something I'm going to next attack. Better lighting should improve the overall quality. Overall I'm really happy with the cameras, as you gain a lot of insights watching your swing and the quality is more than fine. The Protee swing camera integration is good/easy, hopefully some day they will add features that allow you to draw lines on your video for swing plane, etc.

Ping me for additional info as needed, or a pic of the video quality.

Were you able to use windows camera settings to brighten the image?

I have 2 order as well......hoping there may be a way to use gain or some other factor to help reduce graininess. Also, have you determined whether you can save the video and use the file for analysis later

I've played with the camera settings, to include sharpness and brightness. Increasing sharpness caused a bit too much graininess, I think I just need more light so the cameras don't struggle so much. But to be clear, I'm really happy with what I have and the overall quality. It provides great feedback, with the only exception that the club face is a bit blurry.

I have not looked into a way to save videos.

seems to me that, with the excellent VX impact video, there is no need to be able to see the club face on your swing video?

Looks like ethernet connection, hence wouldn't work with the Protee VX. Has to be a plug and play driverless USB camera. I have an older Protee system with high speed USB cameras, but they won't work with the Protee VX :-(

Just got the lastest beta (1.8.6) swing camera now has resolution settings that show fps for each resolution.
