New Owner - Curious on optimal setup

    Hi,

I am a new owner - got the unit on Thursday with a great protection cover from Par2Pro. Installation was simple and calibration seemed similarly so. Was hitting balls like 15 minutes after cabling it including setting up ProTee Labs from scratch.

I played probably 3-4 rounds with perfection. I am using TP5 Stripe black and white balls, and playing in either a dimly lit room, or one with some ambient light. I have a pin light spotlight coming this week to put more light on the ball.

I've noticed a few missed putts and a couple missed drivers (maybe 1 missed iron) in about 600 shots. Nothing crazy, but I'm wondering if there are any tips? The putts were extremely short ones for what its worth, while the drives were not ;-)

I know I need a clean area around the ball (hitting off sigpro softy lite) and ideally not shiny clubs (neither putter nor driver have any chrome). Is there anything special to do in calibration? I just put the plate in the middle and hit "calibrate" and kinda let it be?

    Any tips welcome.

Of note, the ball reads, impact locations, and general physics seem awesome. I'm a long time TM4 guy and prefer this almost immediately - so fast and numbers seem pretty accurate (am mid single digit and stupidly play clubs with very good feedback)

    Cheers,

    P

the rare no reads i see are usually down to the unit losing sight of the ball because something got in the way temporarily such as waving or waggling a club. in those cases it will not show as ready in labs or gspro but i find it easy to miss that ui cue with all the other info one is taking in. i find it remarkably good at detecting even the shortest putts.

Bought this one. I think its the one Joe Lagowski uses in his videos? Seems a bunch on amazon and the first one I ordered (not this exact one) was DOA. This one is coming in today and I'll get it installed and see how it works.

I noticed my wifes Odyssey two ball putter misses some light putts more often than my red Spider. Might be some reflections.

Still very infrequent and hopefully the spotlight will resolve. I assume trying to point it close to straight down to eliminate shadows is the way.

i believe that (and even white shoes and tees) is a known issue. you could try putting some black tape over the putter to see if that helps. Not sure the spotlight will make a difference as the vx sees in infrared so visible light is less relevant.

Will try the tape idea. Have the spotlight in place but anecdotally missing about the same amount. That two ball putter, and my black matte finish G430 driver both miss at much higher frequencies. Maybe 1/5th. Regular irons shots miss only maybe 1-2%. Very new setup and still tuning things mind you.

            (loving it though!)

I've had my Protee for almost 2 years. I get ZERO misses. Really. I have friends over frequently to play, same story. Several have Ping G430 or G440 drivers and 3 woods, no problems at all. I do use TP5 PIX balls, maybe try these or other balls with dark markings that can be seen by the IR cameras.

I'd keep tweaking your setup and lighting, invite friends with other clubs and see if you can narrow down the problem. The 2-ball putter is an obvious challenge for an overhead launcher. I don't have a spotlight, so reflections are more muted than a focused spotlight, though this seems to work for others. But I have a ton of lights on my hitting area to help with my 2 high speed cameras, and no problems whatsoever.

even the unexplained 1-2% is a high no read rate (sounds like it has got higher since your original post with a few in 600?) so worth trying to work out the cause and resolving rather than just getting used to it. i have a pin spot and discounting the ones where something temporarily interrupted the camera view of the ball, i would say no read rate is well below 1%. as part of the process, it might be worth opening up a ticket with protee to check there isnt an issue with your unit.

In two years the only misses I have had are with a white 2 ball putter. Other than that no problems with any colored shoes or drivers.

PIX balls seem EOL - they have some new ones with very strong colouring I may try. I have the TP5 Stripe ones which have pretty good markings. Glad to hear its a likely something I'm doing ;-). Working a bunch today on it and will see how I do. Have moderate ambient light so I can see the screen well and an overhead spotlight.

Super - glad to know this is an anomaly - I have a few things to check and just refining my setup and calibration a bit today - got it out of the box and went very much into playing vs tuning - honestly better experience than I've had in most professional settings.

I'm also a new VX customer. Have it a couple of weeks now. Nice upgrade from my old Skytrak box. I'm not getting any misses, unless I hit from outside the zone. But I am getting some strange spin numbers with my driver - specifically low backspin (in the hundreds), and high spin axis (a few >70 degrees!). These shots tend to be pulls - so definitely not perfect shots, but they don't feel as bad as the spin numbers suggest. What's interesting is that the club data numbers seem more realistic - like 1-2 degrees closed and face-path 2-3 degrees closed. I have a thread with Protee Support and they've been very supportive with taking a look at the shots I submitted - but so far they are saying the data is accurate. What is also interesting is that the ball data and the club data is measured independently - which suggests there could be some discrepancy between those sets of numbers (https://csc.protee-united.com/hc/en-...-discrepancies).

I also got this from Protee Support when I asked whether my lighting could have an impact, and whether hitting from the front or the back of the zone could impact the detection:

                        >Lighting is not an issue, as the VX can measure in total darkness using the infrared spectrum, and ball placement within the hitting zone is also not a factor.

This is great to know - I was wondering if it was better or worse with my ambient light on. Also wondered if I was getting too far up in the hitting zone.

Last night I put some blue tape on my matte G430 driver after probably having 4 of 10 miss - from that point on, it never missed. Wondering if it just wasn't picking up the black.

ProTee support told me my TP5 Stripe balls were not good for the VX. I wasn't able to source new PIX at the time (they appear discontinued) . I grabbed some PIX on the weekend and played 36 with only a single misread and that was a putt I tried to hit 30 degrees offline (too lazy to adjust line!). In all, huge difference.
